Description

Summary/Purpose of the Position:

The Director of Indirect Sales Tax is responsible for overseeing and managing the indirect tax obligations of an organization. This role works directly with the executive leadership and creates a meaningful impact across the organization.

Essential Duties, Functions and/or Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable indirect tax laws and regulations across relevant jurisdictions and states
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of sales tax, and similar returns.

Policy and Strategy Development

  • Develop and implement tax strategies to minimize indirect tax liabilities
  • Provide guidance on the tax implications of business decisions, new products, and services

Tax Audits and Disputes

  • Manage indirect tax audits conducted by tax authorities
  • Represent the organization in tax-related disputes and appeals.

Systems and Processes

  • Lead the optimization of tax technology systems for accurate reporting and compliance
  • Ensure proper documentation of tax processes and transactions.

Collaboration and Training

  • Work with cross-functional teams, including finance, legal, and operations, to ensure indirect tax considerations are integrated into business practices
  • Provide training to staff on tax regulations and changes

Monitoring Legislation

  • Stay updated on changes in indirect tax laws and advise on the potential impacts to the business

Cost Management

  • Oversee budgets related to tax functions and implement cost-saving measures where applicable
Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Master's degree or CPA designation is often preferred.
  • 8 years of experience in indirect taxation or a related area
  • Proven track record of managing tax teams and complex compliance environments
  • CPA, CMA, or Chartered Accountant (CA) designation, advantageous but not required
  • Additional certifications related to tax, such as Certified Sales Tax Specialist (CSTS), may be advantageous
  • Tax Expertise: Deep understanding of sales tax, and other indirect taxes
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret complex tax laws and assess their impact
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and team management capabilities
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication for collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with tax technology software like Avalara, or similar systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions in accordance with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular and timely attendance in accordance with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local regulations.
