The Manager of Patient Care and Emergency Services position performs professional supervisory nursing practice in the care of the physically and mentally ill. The Manager of Patient Care and Emergency Services fills in where there are shortages among the team to maintain optimal patient care. Work involves responsibility for supervising the provision of quality nursing care given at the facility. The position is responsible for maintaining the quality and adequacy of nursing practice and patient care; for coordinating nursing and training programs; for recognizing and assisting in solving professional, administrative and supervisory problems in an assigned area. The position exercises considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge in solving nursing problems within established policies and practices and is reviewed by the supervisor through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained.
Job Summary:
- Works with Director of Patient Care and Emergency Services to determine the optimal allocation of staff, per shift on each unit.
- Communicates concerns by unit to appropriate staff (via e-mails, voice mail, etc.).
- Administers IV medication and fluids via peripherally inserted central catheters or centrally placed IV lines.
- Assists RNs in completing risk assessments and investigations of injury.
- Assures survey compliance, quality assurance and staff development duties.
- Completes evaluations for employees. Presents evaluations.
- Assists with annual budget preparation.
- Assures that staffing is in place. Assigns and directs units and pool staff. Reviews schedule to place unassigned floats.
- Receives employee time off requests. Records time offs and updates schedule.
- Replaces for absences and vacancies for upcoming shift(s). Assists staff to pick up hours
- Maintains proficiency with computer scheduling system. Assigns scheduling responsibilities.
- Works with the staffing schedule to assure that vacancies are filled in advance.
- Supervises staff and assures survey compliance daily. Provides guidance and support to staff to better plan workflow.
- Assists RNs in assessing residents who are experiencing acute changes.
- Provides clinical expertise in the management of medical and psychiatric emergencies.
- Responds to code blue, medical assist and other emergency situations. Assists staff, as needed.
- Provides clinical expertise in medical management, crisis and behavior management techniques.
- Audits charts routinely. Provides clinical expertise in documentation, including MDS, Medicare PPS, acute illness charting, weekly summaries and care planning.
- Completes referral forms for any inquiries/tours and forwards them to appropriate personnel.
- Directs staff response to emergencies, such severe weather, fire or bomb scare. Participates in fire drills. Directs disaster evacuation plan, as needed.
- Meets regularly with the Director of Patient Care and Emergency Services.
- Assists with the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
- Serves and/or leads committees, as assigned, including, but not limited to, quality assurance, infection control, safety, etc.
- Assists with any other duties as assigned.
