Job Description
This individual will be pursuing a Ph.D. program in the Animal Science department at Texas A&M University, while under direction, performs feedlot management responsibilities and conducts research. This position will be located at the McGregor Research Center.
This individual’s Ph.D. program will be advised by a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University. While most classwork will be handled remotely, there will be flexibility to travel to campus weekly.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee feeding of animals in the feedlot, dry lots, and intake study facility.
- Oversee feedstuff inventory, purchasing, and feeding records. Oversee making feed rations, feed ration inventory, and daily feeding schedule
- Oversee upkeep and maintenance of the commodity barn, grain elevator, and feeding equipment. Oversee maintenance of feedlot pens, intake study and cattle handling facilities, waterers, and feed waste.
- Supervise employees.
- May assist in project design and coordination of schedule if research is conducted at the McGregor Research Center.
- Assist in collecting data for research projects for other faculty and graduate students.
- Assist in the care of animals to include vaccinations, deworming, and treatment of injured or sick animals.
- Assist in animal processing, data collection, and coordination of data collection for research projects.
- Assist in maintenance and upkeep of technologies used in these facilities, such as Vytelle feed intake and in-pen weighing system, C-Lock methane collection system, and any new technologies brought to the center for research or management.
- This position requires residing on-site to perform duties and housing will be provided at the McGregor Research Center.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master of Science in ruminant nutrition or related field.
- Two years of experience in related field of work.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of cattle feeding, handling equipment, and understanding feed rations.
- Ability to use computers/notebooks to maintain records using Microsoft Office or software programs.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
- Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends
- Motivated to pursue a Ph.D. in related field of study during time as feedyard manager.
- This position requires residing on-site to perform duties and housing will be provided at the McGregor Research Center.
Research responsibilities as a Ph.D. student if research project is conducted at McGregor:
Under the direction of their advisory committee, the individual will be responsible for developing a research program for their Ph.D. graduate program, which will include:
- Developing research hypothesis and objectives.
- Search for research project funding.
- Developing project design, scope of work, and schedule.
- Coordinating with McGregor Staff on animal, feed, and facility resources and schedules.
- Coordinating and collecting data.
- Analyzing and publishing research work.
