Job Description
The position is assigned to mitigation and wildfire prevention programs that include Community Wildfire Protection Plans, Firewise Communities, completing WUI Risk Assessments and fuel management/reduction issues. Coordinate with municipal, county and federal agencies relating to WUI programs and provide proactive educational technical assistance to community based wildfire prevention programs. During large scale wildfire outbreaks will be engaged in mitigation, prevention and emergency response efforts.

Responsibilities:
  • Assigned to mitigation and prevention programs that include Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP), Firewise Communities, completing WUI Risk Assessments and fuel management/reduction issues. Coordinate with municipal, county and federal agencies relating to WUI programs and provide proactive wildfire educational technical assistance to community based wildfire prevention programs. Encourage cities, counties and fire departments to participate in proactive prevention and mitigation programs to adopt a CWPP or achieve recognized Firewise USA community status.

  • Ensures mitigation and prevention programs are completed in a cost effective manner and within budget. Completes administrative tasks in accordance with applicable laws, rules, procedures, and guidelines. Ensures that programs are tracked with the completion of timely reports.

  • As a subject matter expert for the Texas A&M Forest Service relating to assigned mitigation and prevention issue will advise agency staff, cooperators, stakeholders and the general public. Deliver programs to volunteer and career fire departments regarding firefighter safety, tactics apparatus and PPE in WUI environment. During large scale wildfire outbreaks and all hazards incidents will be engaged in public information, mitigation, prevention and fire suppression or emergency response efforts. Will work within the NIMS/ICS environment.

  • Assist with the field delivery of fuel reduction efforts, healthy ecosystem programs within the Mitigation and Prevention Department, regional wildfire prevention programs, wildland firefighting and all hazard response training programs through coordination, resource sharing and serving as a subject matter expert.

  • Employee is expected to complete all duties with minimal guidance and oversight.

  • Working Conditions: Works in an office environment and meets with external customers both inside an office environment and on-site locations in an outside environment. Travels frequently in support of delivering proactive mitigation and prevention programs and is subject to emergency response assignments. The position works within the NIMS/ICS environment at wildfires and at all hazard incidents. During large scale wildfire outbreaks and all hazard incidents, will be assigned to the following areas: public information, prevention, incident management, fire suppression or emergency response efforts. Requires maintaining TFS wildland firefighter moderate physical fitness standards.

  • During the first year of employment will travel frequently for training sessions requiring overnight stays. After the training period is completed, the position will continue to travel frequently in support of delivering proactive mitigation and prevention programs and is subject to wildfire emergency response assignments, which require travel.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Range Science, Natural Resource Management, Fire Management, Fire Ecology, Agriculture Leadership or closely related field.
Preferred Education: Master's degree in Range Science, Natural Resource Management, Fire Management, Fire Ecology, Agriculture Leadership or closely related field.
Required Experience: No prior experience required.
Preferred Experience: Coursework in wildland fire suppression. Wildland Urban Interface and delivering proactive wildfire prevention programs. Familiar with Texas A&M Forest Service programs and operations. Experience working with print and electronic media.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required Knowledge: Working knowledge of computers and technology used in the Texas A&M Forest Service (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Knowledge: Working practical knowledge of developing and completing Community Wildfire Protection Plans and working with communities towards obtaining recognized Firewise Community USA status. Working knowledge of GIS and the Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment.
Required Ability: Work independently and be self-directed. Develop and maintain relationships with various cooperators, stakeholders and the general public. Work with all forms of the news media. Work with GIS applications. Work within the NIMS/ICS environment at wildfires and at all hazard incidents. Travel and attend required training programs. Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Ability: Complete proactive WUI programs (Firewise practical programs and Ready, Set, Go), conducting WUI Risk Assessments and wildfire prevention programs.
Required Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills working with a wide variety of people.
Preferred Skills: Skilled in wildland fire service terminology, wildfire suppression operations, wildfire prevention campaigns, fire information and all hazard incident response.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
Required: Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Preferred: Hold current NWCG credentials as a PIO, PETM and Firefighter Type II.

Other Requirements:
Ability to walk two miles in 30 minutes or less carrying a 25lb pack. Travel required. Travel and/or working extended hours on short notice. Emergency Fire and All Hazard Response will be required.
