The Student Technician I, under direct supervision, performs basic functional inspection of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and assists with regular maintenance and inspection of SCBA/SCBA masks and all associated equipment. The Student Technician I will also assist with training classes in the use and refilling of SCBA. Assists with operation and preventative maintenance of breathing air compressors. May be required to assist other programs such as Extinguishers, Mechanics, Maintenance, and Construction with facilities operations.
This position reports to the Training Support Foreman.

Job Description

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, and current enrollment in a degree granting program at an accredited college or university.
- Any building trades, maintenance or lawn care experience to include any combination of the following: Welding, carpentry, concrete, heavy equipment operation and the use of hand/power tools.
- Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
- Any Emergency Services or equipment operation experience.
- Ability to move up to 80 lbs., work in adverse conditions, standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling heavy objects.
- Must be mechanically inclined.
- Ability to follow instructions and communicate to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to positively interact with students, vendors, and staff.
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Power equipment such as drills, saws, grinders.
- Forklift, air compressors, and SCBA refill equipment.
- This position is security sensitive.
- This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
- This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
- All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
- Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle.
- This position requires compliance with OSHA/NFPA standards, ESTI Respirator Protection Program related to the proper wearing of respirator. Beards, sideburns or mustaches must not exceed 2” in length for PPE equipment. Shaving of the entire sealing surface area of your face will be required to allow for annual respirator fit testing as well as immediately upon being given assignment of a task requiring use of a respirator. The requirement to shave cannot be discharged and to request the task be assigned to a coworker or subordinate. Refusal to shave immediately upon the assignment of a task, that requires the use of a respirator will result in immediate disciplinary actions up to and including termination if deemed appropriate.
Class Support - 75%
- Performs basic functional inspection of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Assist with regular maintenance and inspection of SCBA/SCBA masks and all associated equipment.
- Assist with training classes in the use and refilling of SCBA.
- Assist with operation and preventative maintenance of breathing air compressors.
- Preposition equipment necessary for class delivery.
- Ensures all equipment is operational and ready for use.
- Assist with preparation, cleanup, and restoration of training projects by securing the equipment in designated storage areas.
- May assist Instructional Staff with SCBA training support.
- May be required to assist other programs such as Extinguishers, Mechanics, Maintenance and Construction with facility operations.
- Prepare training projects/properly demonstrates SCBA equipment for scheduled courses.
- Issue proper protective equipment/clothing to students as needed.
- Serve as Safety Observer during hands-on training exercises.
- Cleans and secures breathing apparatus after conclusion of scheduled courses.
- Maintain appearance of work area at all times, including sweeping and pick up of refuse in shop areas.
- Ensures office and storage areas are organized and clean.
- May be assigned to complete weekly Project Safety Analysis (PSA) of assigned facilities and reports any needed maintenance.
- May assist with maintaining all data regarding inventory and purchases.
- May assist with inventory and maintenance records, logs, mileage reports and assists supervisor with accountability of equipment, materials and replacement parts.
- Comply with work schedule provided and maintains a set work schedule.
- Reports to work on time and duty assignments on time.
- Maintains a clean and neat appearance.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and specified uniforms as required.
- Must show safety awareness and demonstrate safe working habits/practices.
- Attends scheduled safety meetings.
- Completes listed training to include: ESTI Safety Orientation, Basic First Aid, in-house training prior to use for Mule, Forklift, TUG and all SCBA refill equipment.
