Brief Description

The Accountant serves in a critical capacity responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of several accounting activities and supporting the Foundation with financial information. This role utilizes highly computerized systems to record general ledger activity (e.g., tracking contributions, income, and disbursements) related to assets dedicated to support Texas A&M and its many programs and/or Texas A&M Foundation daily operations. This individual assists with preparation of specialized reports, financial statements, and internal controls relying on experience and general accounting knowledge to accomplish goals.

Essential Functions & Core Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger (GL) structure; keeping the chart of accounts updated in the accounting financial information system
  • Prepare, record, and reconcile general ledger (GL) journal entries and accounting schedules
  • Participate in the Accounts Payable cycle; preparation and reporting of disbursements from Foundation accounts
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations; researching and correcting all discrepancies
  • Assist with month-end close of general ledger (GL)
  • Conduct ongoing review and reconciliation of transactions within the accounting financial information system to ensure accuracy of financial postings
  • Assist with the completion of monthly financial reporting
  • Assist with banking system deposits, transfers, electronic payments, and security transactions
  • Assist with endowment compliance and reporting activities; trust and gift annuity processing and life insurance gift payments
  • Research inquiries regarding financial data, allowable cost and other restrictions and limitations
  • Respond to inquiries from Foundation leadership, Business Unit Leaders and University departments regarding fund accounting and special reporting requests
  • Communicate accounting policies to Foundation and/or Texas A&M personnel related to Foundation accounting or disbursements
  • Assess the accounting impact of various business initiatives evaluating revenue and cost driver
  • Monitor and analyze accounting processes and related work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Develop and sustain excellent relationships with colleagues across business units to foster an effective cross functional working environment and collaborative spirit
  • Support the Accounting and Finance team operations serving in back-up capacity and assisting other staff as necessary
  • Contribute to team effectiveness through knowledge-sharing and proactively identifying process improvements

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting, finance, related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 1 years of work experience in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Knowledge of general accounting processes and internal control elements
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft applications (Access, Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality, data integrity and attention to detail
  • Ability to interface with public and external customers in professional and courteous manner
  • Ability to perform duties with accuracy and utilize critical thinking for complex projects
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously and to work calmly under pressure
  • Solid commitment to the mission and vision of Texas A&M Foundation with the ability and desire to serve as a compelling ambassador for the organization and Texas A&M University

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive work experience in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across disciplines/units and build cross-functional, interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Experience working in non-profit organization or higher education industry
  • Experience using and working knowledge of donor database contact management and tracking systems with preference to Salesforce
