The Veterinary Technician I position provides technical support to the Small Animal Emergency Receiving Service of the Small Animal Teaching Hospital.

Salary : Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.This position is eligible for a shift differential.

Schedule : Mayrequire working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty”. Works alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty for sick-call and ventilator call as required.
Other Factors : Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until relieved by the direct supervisor.
Required Education and Experience
Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
One-year relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System
Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician
Certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (ECC, Anesthesia, or Internal Medicine)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Basic computer skills
General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital
No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust
Able to lift or move heavy loads
Provide quality customer service to internal and external customers / clients
Responsibilities
Coverage of Emergency Receiving Service : Performs triage of patients presented to ER Service. Monitors physical and medical condition of critical patients. Administers patient medications as directed by the clinician. Administers and monitors fluid therapy. Performs pain score assessments. Maintains clean and sanitary patient environment.
Performs Medical Procedures per Clinician’s Direction : Places and maintains IV catheters. Places urinary catheters. Places nasal tubes. Places and maintains bandages. Performs wound management.
Provides Life-Sustaining Emergency Care : Performs CPCR and defibrillation. Provides oxygen therapy. Instructs and supervises students in CPCR techniques. Maintains crash cart, anesthesia machine, and other equipment and supplies needed for CPCR.
Maintains Complete and Accurate Medical Records : Records data regarding patient’s physical and medical status. Records all medications administered. Records fluid types and volumes administered. Records information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite and other parameters as needed. Records changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician. Captures fees and inputs fees into the VMIS system.
Instruction and Guidance to Veterinary Students : Instructs veterinary students in emergency procedures and principles. Provides supervision to students performing emergency procedures. Participates in continuing education seminars. Participates in laboratory instruction and instruction of the clinical skills lab.
Assists with Laboratory Monitoring : Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, glucose level, BUN, PCV / TS, ACT, FLV / FIV, heartworm titers, urinalysis, and ethylene glycol). Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. Performs service and maintenance of equipment.
Back-up Duties : Provides oversight of patients housed in isolation. Works alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty for sick-call and ventilator call as required. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate, radiation safety, infection control, and aseptic technique. Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed (
