Job Description
The Executive Director of Academic Advising provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for academic advising programs and initiatives. This position ensures advising supports the academic success, retention, and persistence of students from onboarding to graduation. Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Engagement, the Executive Director collaborates with college leadership, faculty, and key campus stakeholders to implement innovative advising practices, streamline processes, and promote student success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide vision, leadership, and management for the development, implementation, and assessment of the university-wide academic advising program.
- Develop and maintain advising policies, procedures, and resources, including reference materials for staff that reflect common policies and guidelines based on best practices.
- Supervise, train, and develop a team of professional undergraduate and graduate academic advisors.
- Coordinate university-wide advising and retention and recruitment strategies in collaboration with academic colleges, faculty, recruitment, and student success partners.
- Works collaboratively with Dean and Department Chairs to ensure that academic advising serves the distinct interests and needs of its constituents.
- Lead advisor professional development initiatives, emphasizing strengths-based coaching, team building, and the use of emerging technologies.
- Oversee the integration and/or utilization of technology solutions, including degree audits, early alert systems, and advising software, to enhance efficiency and student support.
- Monitor academic advising policies, processes, and communication strategies to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of advising services to inform strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with Enrollment Management to operationalize streamlined pathways for students, including four-year degree plans and articulation agreements.
- Direct the preparation and management of the advising department budget, ensuring compliance with university policies.
- Serve as a liaison to campus committees and task forces focused on student success, enrollment, and retention.
- Coordinate university-wide outreach and communication plans for all students relevant to advising and enrollment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, advising, student affairs, counseling, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five (5) years of related experience in academic advising or higher education.
- Three (3) years of supervisory or managerial experience.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Ten (10) years of related experience in academic advising, student services and/or higher education.
- Five (5) years of supervisory or managerial experience.
- Experience leading advising programs in a higher education setting.
- Familiarity with advising software, degree audits, and retention strategies.
- State of Texas agency and/or higher education experience
- Experience with first year student programming and community engagement
Other Requirements
- Ability to travel and work beyond normal office hours.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
