Job Description
The Assistant Director of Financial Management Services, under general direction, performs moderately complex managerial work assisting with the supervision and control of financial activities.
Responsibilities:
- Provides oversight by ensuring effective and efficient operations including approving fiscal requests, reviewing reports, and preparing journal and budget entries.
- Supervise and trains employees in the accounting office. Develops schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals.
- Maintains internal controls in compliance with laws, policies, regulations, rules, procedures, and sponsor guidelines.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures and oversees compliance with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Provides representation at meetings, workshops, or training sessions.
- Provides financial information, records, and support to departmental users about their budgets.
- Directs liaison effects with the State Auditors’ Office, the Controller’s Office, and other oversight agencies for financial, reporting, and audit matters.
- Identifies areas of needed change and makes recommendations to improve operations.
- Reporting: Preparer of numerous financial reports for the state, the A&M System, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the federal government. Responds to the System Office regarding implementation of new accounting standards.
- Supervision: Responsible for providing guidance, direction, and feedback to staff; Responsible for reviewing journal entries and other work products prepared by staff; provides training as needed and ensures professional development opportunities for staff is availabl
- Budgets: Assists in the preparation of the university's Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) and annual operating budget; monitors budget vs. actual on a monthly basis and ensure that the available expense budgets are aligned with cash available in the general ledgers; Answers questions from departmental users regarding their budgets and accounts.
- Miscellaneous: Responsible for miscellaneous activities of the department including processing Unemployment Compensation payments, debt collection, state deposits, and other entries in USAS, reporting and gathering information for audits, and preparing adhoc Business Objects reports
- Leadership: Provides back-up when needed to the Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs and Controller; Participates in budget and accounting meetings with the Chief Financial Officer; Assists with leadership of the Business Affairs department
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of internal controls. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to work independently once given a project
Salary: $66,524.00
Hours: Monday - Friday; 8am to 5pm; night and weekends as needed.
Supervision of Others: This position generally supervises employees.
Work Location: This is not a remote position and selected candidate will be required to work on campus.
