SUMMARY:
The Veteran Coordinator provides leadership and operational management for veteran student programs at East Texas A&M University, ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations governing veteran educational benefits. This role serves as a liaison between the university, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas Veterans Commission and veteran students, ensuring timely and accurate certification, compliance, and student support.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Certification and Compliance
  • Act as a VA certifying official for East Texas A&M University, ensuring accurate and timely certification of enrollment for veterans and their dependents under Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, and 1606
  • Oversee VA certification packages, electronic certification processes, and compliance surveys to maintain accurate records and ensure audit readiness.
  • Monitor compliance with federal and state regulations and submit required reports to entities such as the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  • Manage Hazlewood Act benefit processing, ensuring adherence to regulations established by the Texas Veterans Commission.
Student Counseling and Support
  • Counsel veterans and their families on VA education benefits, scholarship opportunities, and financial aid processes.
  • Ensure a smooth integration for veterans and their families into the academic and campus community.
  • Advise students on their academic progress, ensuring degree compliance and monitoring changes requiring VA reporting.
  • Serve as a primary resource for students mobilized for military service, ensuring proper enforcement of military withdrawal policies.
  • Guidance on completing admissions application and submitting required documents.
Team and Resource Management
  • Hire, train, and supervise VA work-study personnel to support enrollment certification and office operations.
  • Collaborate with financial aid staff to outreach to veteran students and promote veteran benefits.
  • Work together with university departments and external organizations to secure resources and support services.
Event and Program Leadership
  • Key programs, including the Veterans Vigil, Student Veteran Association, and veteran scholarship initiatives.
  • Participate in university events, orientations, and initiatives to engage with prospective and current veteran students.
Liaison and Outreach
  • Serve as a liaison between East Texas A&M University and the Department of Veterans Affairs, ensuring seamless communication to resolve eligibility and certification issues.
  • Represent East Texas A&M University at events and activities that market university resources to veterans.
  • Train staff and faculty on veteran-specific needs to foster a welcoming campus culture.
Office Management and Service Excellence
  • Maintain a secure, organized, and professional office environment that supports exceptional service delivery.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Two (2) years of related experience. General experience generating reports, performing data entry and maintaining data files within an enterprise software system for managing student records in a college or university setting is required. Familiarity with university policies and procedures and the ability to interpret and apply regulations while maintaining academic integrity. Experience processing applications and student records is required. The candidate must demonstrate work experience that requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to find solutions to enrollment-related issues that impact students attending a college or university. Strong organizational, communication, and supervisory skills. Experience in veteran advocacy, enrollment certification, and student services in higher education.
  • Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift moderate objects.
  • Other Requirements: Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience working in higher education.
Experience with an enterprise database system similar to Ellucian Banner is preferred.
