The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture (TLAC) encompasses students, faculty, and staff whose efforts and interests center on the many different aspects of academics. TLAC's mission is to create experiences that advance teaching, research, and service through the application of knowledge in the preparation and development of quality educators; placing high value on collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, democratic governance and global leadership.
One of four departments in the College of Education and Human Development, TLAC is currently home to over 1,100 undergraduate students, about 360 graduate students, 58 faculty members and 32 staff members. From 2015 to 2020, TLAC produced more than 1,800 teachers and more than 1,000 graduate students (master's, Ph.D. and Ed.D.)
Responsibilities : The Department Head serves as the chief academic, fiscal, development, and administrative officer for the Department. The Head is responsible for fostering faculty excellence in research, teaching, and service consistent with the four pillars of Texas A&M University's vision and the Aggie core values excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and selfless service; providing effective advocacy for the department within the college, university, state, and nation; encouraging a positive, collegial climate; promoting national and international outreach; and establishing a successful record of recruitment, development, and retention of faculty, students, and staff. They should support faculty in seeking and securing internal and external funding. They should be committed to transparent and engaged in faculty governance, and be a collaborative change agents. They should have the ability to inspire and lead others, maintain and project a positive attitude, and execute mediation, and resolve challenges with solutions.
The Setting : Texas A&M University is one of the largest public universities in the nation and one of the few to have land-, sea- and space-grant designations. We are also the main university of The Texas A&M University System and a member of the Association of American Universities.
Qualifications. Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in a field related to any of the department's academic programs; have a distinctive and active record of scholarship, publications, and external funding. Successful candidates must be innovative leaders in their academic field of study; have a strong vision for the future of the field, as well as the challenges and opportunities at the national level; and be able to successfully advocate for the students, staff, and faculty in the department.
They must have administrative and budgetary management experience, and possess good communication skills. Finally, successful candidates must demonstrate success in supporting all faculty, including attracting highly qualified faculty, staff, and students.
