What We Want
The University Writing Center is looking for an Assistant Director to help us manage the day-to-day running of our busy center. Tasks will include overseeing our satellite location, helping to train our 60 graduate and undergraduate peer consultants, assisting with the running of multiple programs including our online writing retreats and writing groups, and assisting with the center’s certification process and annual assessment. The ideal candidate will have experience as a tutor, administrator, or supervisor in a writing or learning center, as well as strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to multi-task. We offer a supportive and creative work environment with an emphasis on staff professional development.
Essential Duties / Tasks
ADMINISTRATION - Manages the operation of the center’s satellite location, including training student staff. Oversees the unit’s First-Gen student initiatives, including hiring efforts. Assists the Executive Director and Associate Director in overseeing daily operations, represents the center at conferences. Assists with maintaining the College Reading Learning Association certification, including curriculum alignment and certification renewal and unit assessment tasks including production of annual report. Manages the unit’s graduate writing retreats and assists with running writing groups and in planning writing center campus events, including faculty workshops and guest speaker presentations.
SUPERVISION - Supervises the graduate tutor team leaders, providing feedback on general job performance and writing annual performance evaluations. Leads a team of undergraduate and graduate tutors to include providing critiques of their consultations and completing an annual performance review. Assists in the hiring process for new undergraduate and graduate tutors. Provides feedback to writing center student employees and serves as the center’s evening and weekend supervisor when needed.
INSTRUCTION - Develops, coordinates, teaches, and evaluates instructional materials for tutors, conducts workshops as needed. Develops and delivers training for staff weekly and twice-yearly trainings. Teaches tutor training classes, mentors undergraduate and graduate students, and serves as a writing coach for writing retreats.
Qualifications
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Six years of related experience in developing, conducting and / or managing educations programs in the field of adult education, leadership training, business, and / or economic development, including related supervisory experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Ability to work evening hours, including Sunday evenings
Ability to work Wednesday mornings 8am to 10 am.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree. Academic specialization in rhetoric (written or oral), written composition, or ESL / EFL.
Four years' experience as a writer, editor, teacher of writing or public speaking, or tutor / administrator in a writing, speaking or learning center.
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Master Tutor Certification
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
Working knowledge of content management systems and databases.
Experience developing and running educational programming
Experience giving presentations
Experience supervising
Knowledge of learning management systems
Experience working with special student populations including ESL students, graduate students, First-Gen students, international students, and / or students with disabilities
Experience keeping tutoring records
Experience with program assessment
What You Need to Know
Salary Range : $58,000 – $66,000 Based on selected hire's qualifications
