Join the Legislative Affairs team! Legislative Affairs provides information and support to the Comptroller’s office and works with lawmakers to advance the interests of Texas taxpayers and the public.
General Description
Performs entry-level work as a Legislative Affairs Summer Intern in the Legislative Affairs Division.Performs customer service duties, handles confidential information, maintains both electronic and hard copy filing systems and performs general administrative support.Handles confidential information, records and other agency documents. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Work Hours
Agency standard work hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, 40 hours per week with occasional evening and weekend hours. Hours are subject to change based upon business need or division determination.
Teleworking may be considered if certain working conditions are met. Applicant will be required to work in office up to 3 days/week, and the days may vary. The applicant may need to report to the office with little notice, as business necessitates. Travel reimbursements are not provided for teleworking.

Education:
Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior at an accredited college or university, or a recent graduate within one year.
Preferred Education:
Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior at an accredited college or university, or a recent graduate within one year with major coursework in public administration, government, public policy, statistics, economics, social science, finance, business, research methodology or related field.
Experience:
Professional or academic experience in research and planning, data analysis, and/or policy development relating to general government programs.
Summary Of Physical Requirements
Employees are required to use their personal mobile phones as a part of 2 factor/multi factor authentication for accessing CPA systems securely. You will also receive critical/emergency calls/texts on your cell phone to ensure immediate communication.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/customer contact. Prior interns have primarily performed sedentary office work; however, mobility (standing and walking) is routinely required to carry out various duties.This position requires the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and reach as needed to perform filing and other similar routine office duties. Some lifting and/or moving, up to 35 lbs. of office equipment and/or materials may be required on a limited basis. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn recall and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions.Marginal or corrected visual and auditory requirements are required for reading printed materials and computer screens and communicating with internal and external customers.

In this role you will:
- Participate in agency activities related to the legislative session; assist with agency legislative tracking, including reviewing filed legislation and identifying legislation that may affect the agency.
- Monitor standing committee schedules and agendas; communicate relevant information to management.
- Attend or monitor committee hearings as assigned, including providing general assistance to agency resource witnesses if needed.
- Prepare report summaries of meetings and hearings.
- Actively monitors House and Senate floor action, including upcoming votes on agency-related bills, reviewing proposed and adopted floor amendments, and communicating all relevant information to management.
- Assist with general office duties including answering phone calls, taking messages, and providing customer service.
- Assist in responding to legislative inquiries by conducting relevant research and formulating draft responses.
- Coordinate communication with agency resources and agency legislative liaisons.
- Attend legislative meetings with legislators and legislative staff under the supervision of agency legislative liaisons.
- May provide support for agency legislative priorities, including working independently with legislative staff to move a bill through the legislative process.
- Greets visitors and directs visitors to appropriate staff.
- Performs word processing functions including entering data on a spreadsheet or database.
- Answers telephone, routes calls to appropriate staff, and takes accurate messages.
- May assist with monitoring/tracking current legislation.
- Prepares and/or distributes routine and special correspondence, reports, forms, or other legislative-related documents.
- Maintains files and/or records and other legislative documents.
- Provides information to the public or other agency staff by telephone or mail.
- May assist with answering inquiries regarding related legislative issues.
- Assists with research and special projects pertaining to legislative issues.
- Performs other related projects as assigned.
