The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. Performs highly advanced (senior-level) restoration, renovation, building maintenance and construction work in a designated skilled trade. Work involves renovation, restoration, alteration, making inspections, adjustments, installations, maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment, dependent on the trade and operating motorized equipment, requisitioning material and supplies; and maintaining records. Process paperwork related to work orders, projects and material requisitions.


Essential Job Functions (EJFs):


Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.

Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards on building systems for various trades such as plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting and electrical, to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Demonstrates the use of hand tools and/or equipment while performing repairs or inspections. Evaluates work to be performed and determines the best method for performing maintenance and repair work.

Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building, building system or adapt it to new uses. Designs projects to conform to applicable codes and standards. Identifies necessary information such as time and physical location. Identifies necessary materials and assembly details. Ensures that the necessary tools and manpower are available to perform the work. Makes in-process inspections to ensure the job is being done properly.

Selects appropriate material to replace and repair building or building systems. Recognizes failures in the operation of the equipment. Correctly identifies the cause of the system or equipment failure and identifies the necessary corrective action.

Acts as a lead worker on construction, maintenance or repair projects. Establishes work schedules, assigns appropriate staff, and oversees repairs or renovations needed.

Maintains safe and uninterrupted services to campus operations and programs systems. Recognizes improper operation and deterioration of the system. Establishes a need for repairs and adjustments. 15%

Uses hand tools, power tools, and tests safety equipment as necessary.

Accurately processes paperwork and maintains records on work orders, projects and material requisitions.

May operate machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc. as necessary. Demonstrates the use of machinery as needed.

May train others on the proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections. Maintains training records for staff.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):


Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operations of buildings, building systems and grounds.

Knowledge of electronics, boilers, painting, plastering and carpentry; of building materials, plumbing and electrical fixtures; welding procedures, HVAC, sanitation, and refrigeration.

Knowledge of industrial safety, fire, and safety regulations.

Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment

Skill in preventative maintenance and inspections of buildings and building systems.

Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, estimate materials; to apply proper methods, techniques and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings, building and utility systems.

Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.

Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.

Ability to supervise the work of others.

Ability to work independently or with a team.

Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and other facility staff.

Ability to solve problems, make decisions and use good judgment.

Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with other members of the maintenance and facility team.


Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:


Position may be required to drive and require a valid Driver’s License and eligible driving record based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Must possess valid TX driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.


If posting is for a plumber: Plumbing license preferred (minimum journeyman) is preferred.


Initial Screening Criteria:


High School diploma, GED or relevant work experience such as masonry, carpentry, painting, performing repairs, renovations and/or routine preventative maintenance to buildings or residential homes.


Vocational training in a designated trade is preferred.


Additional Information:


Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE).


Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.


All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.


Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
