This position is a rotating varied shift: work 2/10 Off Sunday and Tuesday one week, then work 6/2 off Monday and Saturday the following week. The Receptionist works under the supervision of the Switchboard Program Supervisor I with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The Switchboard Receptionist performs routine operations of a multi-line phone system / console, providing continuous communications. Work involves answering and transferring calls to appropriate staff, placing local, long-distance, conference and emergency calls as requested. Maintains rosters of MOD's, Nursing Supervisors and ambulance service. Communicates with campus personnel by two-way radios and/or wireless paging system. Uses computer to perform clerical tasks as assigned, Webmail and Net Support notify for campus wide communications including weather alerts and emergency notifications. Work is reviewed by supervisor or determined by the Administrator.

Must understand that duties, location of job assignment and shift pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet department and hospital needs. Must understand that the duties may include exposure to blood or other potential infectious materials. Actively participate and /or serve in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery of Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Answers and transfers calls, place local, long distance, conference and emergency calls. Answers calls courteously, speaks clearly and transfers calls properly.

Maintains roster of physicians, nurse supervisors, pharmacists, dentist, chaplain, and ambulance services. Updates on-call rosters as needed.

Relay messages using Outlook and Net Support to facilitate communications.

Utilizes the two-may radio and/or wireless paging system, accurately and promptly page personnel as requested.

Keeps roster of patients and staff in order to facilitate work and information flow.

Promptly reports needed repairs.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure that services are provided. Other duties as assigned includes backing-up other positions within the department at 100% of work time at the discretion of the director. This includes, but is not limited to, extended sitting, computer-based duties, extended typing, running errands to multiple campus locations, and sorting/filing of paper documents.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of the operation of a multi-line telephone system or switchboard.

Ability to transfer calls to appropriate personnel and communicate effectively, to greet and direct calls.

Basic computer skills and use of software such as Outlook and Microsoft Office Word.

Initial Screening Criteria

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.

Experience in communications field, receptionist, call center or data entry.

Experience with Microsoft software

Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. Vaccines may be provided. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
