GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Coordinates assessment procedures and provides guidance and supervision to the preparation and implementation of state assessments, GED testing, and other standardized education tests administered to TJJD youth. Works collaboratively with parole officers, education/special education liaisons, and workforce aftercare specialists to ensure that youth leaving the campus are transitioned appropriately to complete academic/workforce success plans in their receiving location. Reports directly to the school principal and coordinates closely with the assistant principal, diagnostician, and teachers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Coordinates and supervises the administration of standardized education assessments in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements, assessment administrative procedures, and TJJD policies. This includes GED assessments, TABE assessments, state education assessments, and other formal assessments as needed.

Ensures that parole officers and appropriate aftercare liaisons have records needed to assist youth released from campus to continue services needed to complete an appropriate education/workforce program.

Works collaboratively with education/workforce, corrections, and treatment staff to support the mission, goals, policies, and procedures of TJJD.

Develops and delivers training to education staff to coordinate assessments within applicable regulations and procedures.

Assists the principal in developing the master school schedule to meet the needs of all youth within TJJD policies and procedures.

Assists the principal and assistant principal in reviewing education records of incoming youth; verifies prior course credits; counsels with youth to develop appropriate individual 4-year education plan and/or workforce program needs; develops and enters youth education/workforce schedules; develops and updates student Academic Achievement Records (AAR); ensures completion of all necessary documents and data entries to establish student schedules; and ensures that each youth’s plan, schedule, and AAR are updated and entered immediately upon completion of academic courses or workforce certification programs.

Assists youth in applying for funding and enrolling in available college courses when needed.

Reports any presence or perception of racial, ethnic, and/or gender disparities.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree with major course work in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field. Three (3) years of full-time wage earning experience of successful classroom teaching or counseling experience.

Required:

  • A valid Texas School Counselor certification.

Preferred:

  • Secondary school counseling experience.

Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.

Requirements for Continued Employment:

  • Failure to maintain required licenses/certifications will result in termination of employment.

Knowledge of:

  • Federal and state laws, regulations, and professional assessment procedures related to the administration of standardized assessments, including the GED, state assessments, and the TABE.
  • Agency policy, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • State requirements pertaining to acquisition of a high school diploma and develop student four-year education plans.

Skill in:

  • Analyzing and using standardized assessment results to guide individual student instruction and in identifying program improvement needs.
  • Providing training and coordination to school staff to properly administer assessments and in using assessment results for instructional improvement.
  • Keeping accurate files and records.
  • Training and providing technical assistance to professional and para-professional staff.
  • Operating computers and using applicable computer software.

Ability to:

  • Work productively with education, corrections, and treatment staff to accomplish mutual program goals and to initiate and accomplish program improvement.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, work with minimum supervision, and accomplish duties in a timely, professional and effective manner.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
