In 1986, Centex (now Eagle Materials) sold a 50% ownership interest in Texas Cement Company to Lehigh Portland Cement Company (now part of Heidelberg Materials North America), forming the joint venture Texas Lehigh Cement Company LP.


Texas Lehigh currently manufactures and markets four different types of construction cement, including three API Spec Oil Well cements (Class A, Class C, and Class H), as well as masonry cements for customers in Texas and beyond. The company's goal is to be the highest quality, low-cost producer of cement products in Texas while prioritizing employee safety and meeting environmental regulations.

Furthermore, the establishment of our Slag cement facility in Houston positions us to offer a sustainable cement alternative for the future.

Program Overview:

The Texas Lehigh Cement Advanced Level Internship Program is an intensive 8-week summer opportunity designed for highly motivated individuals with a strong background in cement technology, materials science, or civil engineering. This program offers a unique, hands-on experience in one of the most advanced cement plants in Texas, providing interns with invaluable industry exposure and technical expertise.


Program Objectives:

  • Provide in-depth exposure to cutting-edge cement production technologies and processes.
  • Develop advanced skills in quality control, cement chemistry, and sustainable production practices.
  • Foster innovation through involvement in real-world projects and research initiatives.
  • Cultivate future industry leaders by providing mentorship from experienced professionals.
  • Enhance understanding of the cement industry's role in sustainable construction and infrastructure development.

 

Program Structure:

The 8-week program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of cement production, quality control, and technical services:


  • Advanced Safety and Industry Standards Training (1 week)
  • Cement Production and Chemistry (2 weeks)
  • Slag Processing and Applications (2 weeks)
  • Advanced Testing and Quality Assurance (2 weeks)
  • Technical Service and Customer Support (1 week)


Our comprehensive advanced level internship program offers hands-on experience, working closely with our Technical Service Manager and mentorship from other industry experts.


Key Learning Areas:

  • Advanced cement chemistry and material science
  • Kiln operations and clinker production
  • Energy efficiency in cement manufacturing 
  • Quality control and statistical process control in cement production
  • Environmental impact assessment and sustainability initiatives 
  • Application of slag cement in reducing carbon footprint
  • Customer technical support and problem-solving

 

Projects and Responsibilities:

Interns will have the opportunity to:


  1. Conduct research on innovative cement applications, particularly focusing on low-carbon alternatives.
  2. Participate in mix design optimization for various construction projects across Texas.
  3. Analyze and report on the performance of slag in concrete applications.
  4. Assist in troubleshooting customer issues and providing technical support.
  5. Contribute to ongoing sustainability initiatives, including efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in cement production.

 

Professional Development 

  • Weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions with the Technical Service Manager
  • Participation in departmental meetings and decision-making processes
  • Networking opportunities with industry professionals and Texas Lehigh and Eagle Materials executives
  • End-of-program presentation to the management team on a selected research topic or project

 

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Current enrollment in a junior or senior year of relevant engineering program (CIM, Chemical, Materials, Industrial, Civil, or Environmental Engineering)
  • Strong academic background with GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Previous coursework in cement technology, concrete materials, raw materials, or related fields
  • Prior internship or research experience in the cement or concrete industry highly desirable
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Passion for sustainability and innovation in the construction materials industry
