TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

NOTE: INTERNAL POSTING. OPEN TO LAW ENFORCMENT EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief position, this position performs wildlife, conservation, and natural resources enforcement work and is responsible for assisting with the administration of the Wildlife Enforcement Program and the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact. Coordinates the Division's rule making process to ensure all deadlines are met and adopted proclamations are distributed. Assists with the Legislative process to ensure task and goals are accomplished and with drafting program related regulations and legislation. Provides guidance, leadership, and supervision of employees assigned to the Law Enforcement Division. Supervises the Wildlife Enforcement Program Lieutenant and Administrative Assistant, including monitoring the Operation Game Thief (OGT) program and Law Enforcement Grants Program to ensure the programs are meeting performance standards. Represents the Law Enforcement Staff, when assigned, in meetings affecting Law Enforcement Division Programs. Responsible for continuously viewing, statutes, regulations, policies, procedures and programs and inform the Chief of Staff on a regular basis. Coordinates with other divisions any changes or updates needed to properly manage the programs. Develops required material for distribution and attends the required training sessions to ensure proper administration of programs. Assists in planning future law enforcement procedures and make recommendations on appropriate changes to the Director of Law Enforcement, Deputy Director, and Chief. Provides information and advice to the Law Enforcement Division Headquarters' Staff and field personnel in areas of responsibility to maintain statewide enforcement consistency. Carries out special assignments as requested. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Graduation from the Texas Game Warden Training Academy.

Experience:

Eight years experience as a Texas Game Warden.

Licensure:

Must possess a valid class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Must possess a current license as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Commissioned as a Texas Game Warden by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon maintaining required licenses.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

Education:

One additional year of the required experience as a Texas Game Warden may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of statutes, proclamations, regulations and policies related to the enforcement of all provisions of the Texas Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, and all regulatory acts adopted under the authority of the Parks and Wildlife Code regarding fisheries resources, game animal resources, game bird resources, non-game resources, furbearing resources and provisions of the Texas Water Safety Act;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in meeting deadlines;

Skill in planning, assigning and/or supervising the work of others;

Skill in identifying staff training needs and researching, developing, coordinating and delivering presentations and/or training material to meet identified needs;

Skill in communicating, coordinating and working effectively with other employees, the general public and/or with other agencies to accomplish TPWD and/or Law Enforcement Division programs, activities, goals and objectives;

Ability to apply appropriate management techniques that result in effective and appropriate guidance and leadership to employees and others;

Ability to work with the Texas Legislature and Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to draft statutes and regulations and be a resource witness;

Ability to plan and evaluate the work of others, and devise appropriate employee development strategies to maximize employee performance and morale.

Ability to maintain the operational readiness of equipment and personnel;

Ability to read, interpret and effectively apply relevant agency, state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, proclamations, policies and procedures;

Ability to use computers to develop, maintain and monitor reports, records, documents and other information;

Ability to work under tight deadlines with changing priorities and workloads;

Ability to work and interact effectively as a member of the agency, division and regional management support and accomplish establish goals and objectives;

Ability to function as a liaison in the State Operation Center during emergencies;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as necessary;

Must reside within 50 air miles of Austin Headquarters

Required to travel 30% with possible overnight stays;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
