TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

NOTE: INTERNAL POSTING, OPEN TO TPWD LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, this position performs wildlife, conservation, and natural resources enforcement work, including, conducting overt investigations related to Resource Investigations, Environmental Crimes, Critical Incident Investigations and other investigations as assigned. This position will have an emphasis on overt investigative strategies. Responsible for execution of search warrants, arrest warrants, and subpoenas as ordered by the courts resulting from law enforcement activities. Conducts covert and overt investigations and law enforcement activities as assigned by the supervisor anywhere in the State and possibly continuing into adjoining states. Establishes and implements techniques for intelligence gathering designed to enhance law enforcement duties. Prepares and submits reports and other paperwork required by the agency, division and unit procedures, as well as case reports, affidavits and any documentation required by other agencies and the courts. Performs special assignments for Homeland Security efforts. Assists other law enforcement agencies when requested. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Graduation from the Texas Game Warden Academy.

Experience:

Four years experience as a Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden from the date of graduation from the Game Warden Training Academy.

Licensure:

Must possess a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.

Must possess current license as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Commissioned as a Texas Game Warden by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses and certification.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

Education:

One additional year of required experience as a Texas Game Warden may substitute for 30 semester hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, TPWD Proclamations, Texas Penal Code (including Rules of Evidence) and the sections of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure relating to the construction of warrant affidavits for the purposes of obtaining a valid search warrant;

Knowledge of Law Enforcement Division Operational Procedures;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in making independent, sound, timely decisions;

Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department, other State agencies and organizations;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in identifying and using sound investigative tactics and strategies to bring criminal cases to prosecution;

Skill in preparing and completing all required agency and investigative reports and court documents during and at the conclusion of an investigation using a personal computer;

Skill in presenting cases to prosecutors and testifying and/or presenting evidence in criminal trials;

Ability to work under stressful conditions;

Ability to maintain written documentation and accurate records relating to an investigation, including but not limited to contacts, activities, information and intelligence and state funds expended during investigation activities;

Ability to research, interpret and apply state and federal statutes and regulations;

Ability to make and use sound judgements in the enforcement of criminal laws and regulations;

Ability to communicate and work effectively with other TPWD employees and/or other agencies or groups;

Ability to write and execute legal documents, such as search warrant and probable cause affidavits;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 25 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD Safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

Required to be on-call 24 hours per day in case of emergency;

May work weekend assignments and away from assigned location as needed;

Required to stay awake for extended periods of time;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 25 lbs.;

Must reside within 50 air miles from one of the following TPWD offices:

  • North Houston LEO (350 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Suite 100 / Houston, TX 77060)
  • South Houston LEO (10101 SW Fwy, Suite 206 / Houston, TX 77074)

Required to operate a State vehicle;.

Required to travel 50% with possible overnight stays.

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
