Our small and growing manufacturing client in Bristol, VT is seeking a Controller, who can assist with some HR tasks including payroll responsibilities for a small team. This is a full-time position, onsite to start, then hybrid and long term.
Controller
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting operations, including financial reporting, recordkeeping, and control systems designed to manage cash flow, mitigate risks, and improve the accuracy of financial results. This role also handles HR policies, employee benefits, payroll, and staffing processes, including onboarding and exits.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain and enforce accounting policies and procedures.
- Oversee the accounting department to ensure accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly statements, annual budgets, and reviews.
- Post journal entries and perform bank, credit card, and cash reconciliations.
- Manage accounts payable/receivable for timely processing of disbursements, receipts, and cash control.
- Oversee accounting operations for subsidiary LLCs, especially transaction reporting.
- Manage yearly insurance policy applications for all subsidiaries.
- Analyze cost allocations, investigate variances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Lead process improvements for operational efficiency and accuracy.
- Collaborate with external accounting firms to ensure tax compliance and completion of corporate tax returns and annual reviews.
- Support audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in special projects and compile related reports.
- Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures.
- Work effectively in a team environment.
HR/Payroll Responsibilities
- Process payroll bi-weekly.
- Handle W-2s and tax form processing.
- Administer 401(k) compliance documentation.
- Manage employee benefits (health insurance, retirement, etc.).
- Serve as the primary contact for employee inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and HR policies.
- Assist with recruitment efforts, including job postings, resume screening, interviews, and onboarding.
- Maintain employee records and ensure legal HR compliance.
- Help update the employee handbook and ensure policies reflect current laws.
- Manage employee relations, offering guidance and resolving HR issues.
- Handle workers' compensation claims and incidents.
- Ensure compliance with labor regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- 10 years of experience as a Senior Accountant or Controller
- Payroll experience required, HR experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of accounting, budgeting, sales, business development, and strategic planning.
- Proven ability to develop and implement systems.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency in financial systems -ideally NetSuite or similar large software
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to drive results.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to plan 1-3 years ahead.
