Two years of professional case management experience in the criminal justice system
Knowledge of local, state, and federal guidelines, rules, regulations, and statutes as they pertain to probation and sentencing parameters
Knowledge of interview techniques
Knowledge of Charlotte County treatment providers
Ability to deal politely, effectively, and professionally with persons from various backgrounds, who are experiencing a variety of stressful conditions
Ability to identify resources and various programs available and applicable to the specific needs of persons on supervised probation
Ability to drive an automobile
SUMMARY
The probation officers perform professional work in supervising adult defendants who commit misdemeanor and criminal traffic offenses. Additionally, probation officers may supervise juveniles who are sentenced to probation for a criminal traffic offense. Probation provides an alternative to incarceration, and Probation Officers provide protection for the public by supervising and monitoring defendants placed on probation. Probation supervision includes providing leadership and direction to the probationers. The incumbents exercise independent judgment and initiative within their scope of authority. Work is performed in accordance with Court orders and directives from Judges and is subject to administrative direction. Probation Officers complete PSIs as required.
The core responsibilities of this position are: 1) Supervision of County Misdemeanant Defendants, 2) Monitor Compliance with Court Orders and Prepare Required Documents, 3) Make Recommendations to the Court, 4) Maintain Probation Files, 5) Prepare Pre-sentencing Investigation reports, 6) Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(1) Supervision of misdemeanant defendants
Conduct new probationer orientation
Counsel and refer probationers to specialized treatment facilities and resources within the community
Refer to counseling agencies, job employment services, food and shelter centers, educational opportunities, and life skills classes, etc.
Provide leadership and direction to the probationer to assist in completion of the probation requirements
Monitor cost of supervision, fines, and court costs, diversion fees, and restitution payments
Provide case management functions
Drug and alcohol testing of defendants
(2) Monitor Compliance with Court Orders and Prepare Required Documents
Conduct home visits as necessary
Perform investigations in accordance with court orders and directives from the Judges and the department head
Compile information and prepare and deliver detailed reports to the court orally and in writing
Conduct follow-up with treatment facilities
(3) Make Recommendations to the Court
Make recommendations relating to the requests for warrants, modifications, and dismissals of warrants, violation hearings
Make recommendations for penal sanctions for violation of probation, referrals to outside agencies, and recommendations for bonds
Provide recommendations to the court concerning defendant's custody issues
Provide investigation to the court concerning defendant's custody issues
(4) Maintain Probation Files
Maintain accurate, up-to-date, files on all probationers under supervision caseload both electronically and paper.
(5) Prepare Pre-sentencing Investigation Reports
Conduct interview(s) with defendant and collateral contacts to ascertain statement of facts
Complete a comprehensive national / state/ local criminal background check and social history on the defendant
Ability to keep all investigative report findings confidential
Formulate a sentence recommendation to the Court
(6) Other
