Director Of Finance
***Relocation to Los Angeles, CA required***
Position Overview:
The Director of Finance will serve as the senior-most financial executive in the Firm and a proactive andintegral part of the Firm's leadership team. They will originate, implement, and manage the most efficient, forward-thinking operations of the Firm from both a detailed understanding of the data to the overall strategy and “big picture” of the Firm’s financial health and overall success.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee and manage all financial operations of the Firm
• Provide guidance and advice on business strategy, operations, and management and support
and judgment calls on high-level business issues such as malpractice claims, conflicts, and overall general firm management
• Process all bank transactions for the Firm – wires, ACH, internal bank transfers
• Calculate owner compensation estimates and work with Management Committee to review and adjust estimates
• Prepare compensation analyses related to lawyer on-boarding
• Prepare and present weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual financial reports
• Provide analysis and insight of data for individual timekeepers and Firm overall
• Calculate and review profitability of timekeepers and departments monthly; provide insight and explanation of data rendered
• Prepare and maintain annual budget
• Act as primary liaison with outside accountants for all financial matters including preparation of tax returns, PTET, and related issues
• Oversight of Finance and Accounting team
• Prepare mid-year and year-end performance review statistics (with assistance of HR team)
• Provide high-level billing and AR support for complex and technical issues
• Work with Management Committee and Finance Team for annual billable rate increases and notices
• Manage and monitor client trust/IOLTA account
• Provide information for and pay estimated and other tax payments for certain owners (in
conjunction with outside accountants)
• Work with bank and owners for renewal of line of credit
• Monitor owner Professional Corporations (renewals, registrations, payments, payroll when needed, etc.)
• Reconcile real estate closings and apply payments from trust account
• Monitor bank accounts and balances; review monthly bank reconciliations and monitor cash flow
• Handle PTET process and payments for Firm and owner entities
• Monthly review of income statement and balance sheet
• Review contractor payments and AP with Finance Assistant
• Process and manage monthly Partner Draws
• Calculate and process quarterly origination bonuses
• Review 1099s before filing
• Manage related investment entity and investments
• Review/analyze contract renewals with Director of HR & Operations (for software, services, copiers, research, vendors, etc.)
• Collaborate with HR & Ops Team on areas of overlap such as 401k, health insurance renewal, and compensation
• Collaborate with Director of HR & Operations on renewals of all business insurances including
EPLI, Malpractice, Business Liability, Cyber, Worker’s Compensation, and Crime
• Lead weekly management committee meetings and monthly partner meetings
• Partner with Director of HR & Operations on IT projects, with IT Administrator,
vendor/consultant.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required - additional certifications a plus (MBA, CPA or CLM, for example)
• Ten plus years of demonstrated success and leadership in law firm management
• Strong computer and technical skills required, high level of comfort with technology (high
proficiency with Excel required; Coyote Analytics experience preferred)
• Ability to learn quickly and strong ability to problem solve and figure out answers if unknown
• Strong organizational skills to ensure matters are handled timely and do not fall through the cracks
• Experience leading, planning, and managing in a client-oriented setting and leading and
developing a team of professionals to consistently meet priorities and goals
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Familiarity with multi-state issues and PTET preferred
