Overview

The Districts and Sections communications specialist is a member of ACOG’s public affairs department. This position supports both the state legislative affairs team and the District Managers and plays a primary role in overseeing ACOG’s critical advocacy communications at the state level about policies that impact the delivery of obstetric and gynecologic care, including reproductive health care and maternal health. The position will advance our legislative advocacy at the state level through effective resource development and by leveraging our District and Section leaders as spokespeople with both state-level media and national media coverage of state issues.

Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

• Support for the organization’s two senior managers of media relations through the creation of state advocacy communications materials, including ACOG-branded media statements and op-eds and letters to the editor on behalf of District and Section leadership.• Preparation of District and Section leadership for media and speaking engagements, including through proactive group media trainings and one-on-one preparation prior to specific interviews, in collaboration with the organization’s two senior managers of media relations.• Development of talking points that reflect the intersection of ACOG’s messaging and voice with the local needs of state leaders.• Drafting of advocacy-focused social media content related to state legislative challenges and opportunities.• Creation of member-facing communications regarding legislative opportunities at the state level.• Coordination with state legislative affairs team and with District and Section leadership to stay aware of upcoming legislative challenges and opportunities.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated proficiency in media-facing materials.• Familiarity with the legislative process.• Knowledge of health policies that impact the delivery of obstetric and gynecologic care, including reproductive health and maternal health.• Proven responsiveness and skill balancing the needs of a variety of internal clients.• Must be able to work effectively and harmoniously with staff at all levels within the organization.

 

Education and Experience:• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Political Science, or related field.• Minimum of four years’ experience in strategic communications in the government/legislative sector, at a nonprofit institution, or in the media.• Experience with or passion for ob-gyn health preferred.

Compensation

The base salary for this position is $52,000 - $62,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, ACOG offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes the perks outlined below.
