Overview:
The Legal Policy Manager is responsible for managing the logistical day to day operations of the Legal Department. Ensures that deadlines are met, assigns responsibility when applicable, monitors and summarizes progress of various projects within the department. Manages activities of various team members in relation to assigned programs and projects. Conducts research on legal issues, ACOG policy, and clinical guidance. Develops, and implements organizational systems, and partners with ACOG attorneys and staff in conducting the work of the department.

Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:
  • Partners with department leadership in the management of the Legal Department, ensuring that staff needs are met by the members of the department.
  • Conduct legal, policy, and factual research as assigned.
  • Develop and implement improvements to the department’s workflow, including systems for tracking contracts and clinical guidance, systems for filing and tracking amicus briefs and other court filings, and systems for facilitating and tracking insurance renewals.
  • Act as the legal point of contact for the Finance Department on required state business licenses, state charitable organization registrations, PAC and lobbying reports, and other required regulatory filings, as needed.
  • Manage ACOG’s insurance portfolio, under attorney supervision.
  • Provide management and organizational support for Committee meetings involving the work of the division, as needed.
  • Manage ACOG’s Grievance Committee, including monitoring state medical boards, communicating with external stakeholders and creating templates and timelines.
  • Conduct first level review of clinical documents and other ACOG materials generated by ACOG staff, volunteers, and leadership.
  • Manage ACOG’s amicus brief practice, including capturing historic information, tracking pending cases, updating attorneys regarding new developments, coordinating amicus coalitions and pro bono legal services, and providing day-to- day support for the approval process.
  • Conduct first level review for amicus brief invitations.
  • Manage social media and website updates on cases and amicus briefs filed in conjunction with internal Communications staff.
  • Conduct educational sessions for ACOG staff concerning the activities of the department, including sessions on particular procedures, such as the contract procedure.
  • Prepare first drafts first level of review, negotiate and approve categories of standard contracts under attorney supervision.
  • Partners with attorneys in advising ACOG staff on compliance issues and questions, including researching best practices and monitoring ACOG practices.
  • Partners with attorneys with corporate governance issues, including transition of activities between corporate entities, revisions to bylaws, organizing historical governance documents, and creating a system to manage governance documentation going forward.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for information from Fellows and ACOG staff.
  • Partners with attorneys with litigation matters and subpoena responses, when necessary.
  • Oversees the preparation of reports to the Board and other internal and external stakeholders on the progress of the division.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational and analytic skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage multiple projects, exercise sound professional judgment, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or other related software and Internet research skills are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a variety of levels of professional staff and physician volunteers is essential.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 5 years of relevant paralegal and/or program management experience required.

Compensation
The base salary for this position is $70,000 - $80,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, ACOG offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes the perks outlined below.
