Job Title: Department Service Officer (Veterans Advocate)
Location: American Legion Office – 311 Elm Street, Suite 330, Cincinnati, OH. 45202
The American Legion, Department of Ohio, is seeking a Department Service Officer for employment at 311 Elm Street, Suite 330, Cincinnati, OH. 45202. The work schedule is Monday – Friday 8am-4:30pm. This is a salaried position starting at $42,500 annually. Paid vacation to include personal time off. Medical and dental insurance after 90 days and 401K with employer match after 1 year. Benefits are explained further in the interview. As a Department Service Officer, you will assist veterans and their dependents in filing claims for service connections, increases, and appeals to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Responsibilities:
- Answer phone calls and respond to questions regarding VA benefits and local resources
- Greet clients in a friendly manner who may walk into the office
- Assist veterans and their dependents in filing claims and appeals for benefits
- Assist veterans in obtaining military and government documentation
- Maintain professional working relationships with other Service Organizations and the Department of Veterans Affairs
- Process claims and courtesy copies from the County Veteran Service Offices
- Provide excellent customer service to all veterans, spouses, and dependents
Qualifications/Skills
- Veteran status required
- Must be able to pass a background check for employment with the American Legion and a Federal background check for Accreditation with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Basic legal knowledge of Federal veteran law, rules, and regulations centered around benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (38 CFR)
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills
- Organized record keeping and accuracy of documentation
- Communicate effectively through email, letter writing, and phone calls
- Promotion of a positive client experience
- Ability to communicate with compassion and empathy with others who may be experiencing physical and mental disabilities or loss of loved ones
Able to travel annually for training 1-2 times per year as needed.
