The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) serves as a vital educational and cultural link between the United States and the five Nordic countries : Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. A publicly supported nonprofit organization, the Foundation fosters cultural understanding, provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, and sustains an extensive program of fellowships, grants, internships / training, publishing, and cultural events. In October 2000, ASF inaugurated its headquarters, Scandinavia House : The Nordic Center in America, where it presents a broad range of public programs furthering its mission to reinforce the strong relationships between the United States and the Nordic nations, honoring their shared values and appreciating their differences.

ASFs operating budget for FY 24-25 is $4,493,732. In addition, $1,296,667 is budgeted for fellowships and grants. In the past year ASF has made $1.5M in awards to more than 115 students, scholars, artists, and organizations, and the Fellowships program was ranked among the Top-10 Trendiest Fellowships by ProFellow .

The Director of Development is responsible for all fundraising activities as well as supervision of membership. A Membership Coordinator reports to the Director of Development.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :

Administration and coordination of Development Strategy and Systems, including :

  • Create donor relation strategies and tactics as well as systems to identify and build a pipeline of major donors.
  • Develop Annual Funding plans for both unrestricted and restricted for operations and program support.
  • Coordinate Capital and Endowment funding plans.
  • Manage Planned Giving donations.
  • Develop systems to monitor and grow Foundation and Corporate grants.
  • Research and identify prospects.
  • Manage gift record processing.
  • Coordinate personalized acknowledgement and recognition of gifts.
  • Record data and donor information in Salesforce database.
  • Oversee and maintain online donation platform.

Administration and coordination of Special Events :

  • Oversee the execution of the annual gala.
  • Collaborate on the creation of other friend and other fundraising events.
  • Administration and coordination of Membership and related activities, including :

  • Supervise Membership Coordinator and develop strategies to achieve goals.
  • Ensure direct mail and online promotion strategies are implemented to support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members.
  • Oversee Membership Coordinator on special membership events such as exhibition previews.
  • Develop systems and to work with President, ASF Trustees and senior administration to :

  • Plan and implement development policies and programs.
  • Identify revenue objectives that match funding needs and opportunities with private and government sector resources.
  • Match foundation priorities with potential funding sources at the individual, corporate and foundation levels.
  • Meet short-term and long-term goals and objectives of both annual fund and the Renewal Initiative for Scandinavia House.
  • Plan and manage strategies and funding proposals for unrestricted, restricted, capital, and endowment gifts, including annual project support for all public programs.
  • Identify prospects, develop strategy, and cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Manage major gifts cultivations and solicitation to individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Oversee stewardship and gift acknowledgements.
  • Coordinate visits to Scandinavia House by key prospects, donors, members, friends, and patrons of ASF, and coordinate visits of President to overseas Trustees and prospects.
  • Develop and manage direct mail and online annual appeals by :

  • Liaise with communications and vendors to design and manage a direct mail program and digital giving strategies.
  • Analyze direct mail / digital solicitation program results data.
  • Oversee strategy and implementation of Giving Tuesday and end-of calendar year, and end-of fiscal year giving.
  • Work closely and coordinate with communications staff to :

  • Oversee donor advancement publications, reports and news releases.
  • Prepare annual and campaign reports.
  • Other duties as determined and assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • 5-10 years of successful nonprofit development experience with increased responsibilities and a track record of accomplishments.
  • Experience managing staff with the ability to advise, mentor, and manage up, down, and across the organization.
  • Experience in developing and implementing fundraising plans with a strong knowledge of principles and practices.
  • Ability to identify and measure fundraising and communications outcomes and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Solid commitment to the mission of American-Scandinavian Foundation / Scandinavia House with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for the organization.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Strong technology skills : Microsoft office, CRMs : expertise in fundraising software and tools with experience in Salesforce a plus.
  • Available to work full-time onsite in the office.
  • Familiarity with Nordic countries and cultures a plus.

    Salary range is $100-$130K commensurate with experience and other qualifications.
