POSTED ON 3/26/2025 CLOSED ON 4/4/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinarian Intern, ASPCA Animal Hospital position at The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals?

Summary:

The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) provides care for animals whose owners are experiencing financial challenges and could not otherwise afford medical care for their cats and dogs. Additionally, we provide life-saving care for animal victims of cruelty and neglect who come to us through our internal partners (Adoption Center, Kitten Nursery, Community Medicine, and Community Engagement teams) and through our external partners (New York Police Department and other NYC organizations).

The AAH Internship Program provides excellent practical experience with a high caseload and strong mentorship from veterinarians who have dedicated their careers to this life changing work. AAH interns participate in core rotations in the hospital, such as internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, and emergency. The emergency rotation is a combination of appointment-based emergencies with emergency procedures. Interns have the hands-on opportunity to perform procedures, such as stabilizing and unblocking cats with urinary obstructions, wound treatments, splint changes, aural hematoma repair, and esophagostomy tube placement.

In addition to core rotations, our interns train in dentistry to arm them with day one ready dental skills as well as general soft tissue surgery. Interns also rotate through our Community Medicine high volume/ high quality spay and neuter clinic, and master techniques developed by the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (formerly known as Humane Alliance).

The AAH Internship Program offers unique and specialized rotations in medical care of animal cruelty victims (anti-cruelty rotation) and veterinary forensic medicine. The ASPCA anti-cruelty veterinary medical team provides daily care for animal victims of cruelty in a shelter facility. The ASPCA NYC forensic veterinarians have a combined total of 55 years of veterinary practice and 29 years of work in veterinary forensic medicine. The forensic veterinary and anti-cruelty veterinary medical teams work together to gather evidence for criminal prosecution of animal cruelty cases and to provide necessary medical care for health and behavior rehabilitation.
