Position Summary:
Provides oversight to all Animal Welfare Team Members and the work they perform. Monitors and evaluates animal inventory to prioritize humane care, biosecurity, isolation, quarantining, behavioral well-being, and expedites procedures to decrease length of stay, improve the opportunity for adoption of animals, and provide supportive care for animals on extended holds. Oversees the husbandry and care of a variety of species of animals including domesticated pets, exotics, livestock, and wildlife. Implements and provides daily enrichment activities and provides mental well-being for animals in our care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: *

  • Responsible for management of Team Members, including hiring, firing, training, and retaining.
  • Ensure standards of care according to Association of Shelter Veterinarian Standards of Care guidelines are provided for all animals in shelter care in a timely manner; including appropriate feeding, cleanliness and sanitation, behavioral well-being, and stress reduction.
  • Reviews and audits daily reports from the animal inventory and control management system to assign work based on audits.
  • Reports and addresses discrepancies and errors to ensure legal hold compliance requirements are met.
  • Reviews and responds timely to email correspondence.
  • Ensure animals are housed appropriately according to species, age, contagion, and behavioral needs.
  • Monitors populations regularly to ensure appropriate housing space is available for all incoming animals.
  • Assists with the management of large or critical impoundments received through animal control partners.
  • Ensures systems are in place for daily care monitoring of all animals in the Organization’s care; provides continual health and behavior monitoring of animals housed, and reports signs of illness, injury and behavior issues as needed.
  • Assists to achieve and maintain a high volume of Team Member participation in enrichment activities.
  • Investigates accidents, determines causes, reports findings, and takes appropriate actions such as instituting preventive measures when possible.
  • Writes, reviews, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensures Team Members are able to access all pertinent documentation to be able to effectively perform their job duties.
  • Assists department leaders in developing and maintaining outreach education for the community on how to provide enrichment in a home environment.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly appearance of all kennel areas.
  • Assists guests as required.
  • May contribute to the construction of team member work schedules, tracking attendance, scheduling/approving Team Member time-off requests, overtime, etc.
  • Provides supervision of volunteers.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times.
  • Composes correspondence and other documents; performs clerical duties to support the operations of the department.
  • Exposure to and assistance with humane euthanasia of animals, as needed.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s service to its guests by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Provides responsive, meaningful, and compassionate service to all guests.
  • Applies the principles of The Animal Foundation’s Core Values toward the goal of bettering self, the organization, and others.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements: *

  • Equivalent to a High School diploma.
  • One (1) year of professional experience in an animal welfare environment.
  • One (1) year in a supervisory role.
  • Equivalent combination of formal education and appropriate related experience may be considered.

License & Certification Requirements: *

  • Incumbent must be at least 21 years of age, and possess and maintain a valid Class C Nevada Driver License. Those under age 25 must possess and maintain a clean driving record, and be licensed for at least three years prior. Those over age 25 must possess and maintain a safe driving record that will allow for acceptable insurance risk to the Organization.
  • CPDT-KA preferred or ability to receive within three (3) years of employment, and participate with continuing education and updated best practices.

Required Knowledge and Skills: *
Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of customer service.
  • Principles and practices of supervision and management of staff.
  • Basic interviewing techniques.
  • Standard office administrative practices and procedures, including record-keeping systems and the operation of office equipment, computers, and associated software.
  • Animal health, nutrition, and humane care.
  • Animal breeds and characteristics, including livestock and exotic animals.
  • Humane euthanasia and its principles and practices.
  • Techniques for dealing effectively with Team Members and the public, in person and over the telephone.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Some positions may require understanding and speaking Spanish, as well as English.

Skill in:

  • Gathering and compiling information; preparing accurate reports and summaries.
  • Dealing tactfully and effectively with Team Members, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Safe and humane animal handling.
  • Use of business software and associated computer hardware.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, instructions, and other written materials.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort: *
Physical ability and mobility to work in a typical office environment. Strength to lift and/or move materials weighing up to 25 pounds frequently, 50 pounds occasionally. Vision to read printed materials. Stamina to sit and work with a computer for an extended period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.

Team members are continuously exposed to animals, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, high noise, and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites and occasional work outdoors for extended periods of time while exposed to cold and extremely hot temperatures.
