Afterschool Assistant Director for Writing Development

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly proficient and passionate Afterschool Assistant Director – Writing Development to join our team. This individual will be responsible for strengthening students’ writing skills, fostering a love for writing, and ensuring a strong foundation in grammar, structure, and handwriting. The ideal candidate must have excellent English proficiency, a deep understanding of the four types of writing, and neat, legible handwriting, including knowledge of cursive writing. This role involves teaching students from Pre-K through 5th grade in an engaging and supportive environment.

Requirements:

• The candidate will be expected to pass a writing/grammar screening with 90% accuracy or above
• The candidate will be expected to conduct two small group lessons for grades 1st -2nd and 3rd -5th during an observation interview.

Ideal Candidate

• Must be available to begin work on or by March 31, 2025
• Must be available to work the entire 2025 summer camp (June 2, 2025 – July 18, 2025) during the hours of 8:00am-5:30pm.
• Commit to continuing employment for the 2025-2026 Academic Year (July 2025 – May 2026)

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement writing instruction for students in Pre-K through 5th grade.
• Strengthen students' writing skills in narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive writing.
• Provide individualized support to help students improve their grammar, sentence structure, and overall writing ability.
• Teach proper handwriting techniques, including cursive writing.
• Create a structured and engaging curriculum that meets the needs of various learning levels.
• Collaborate with other staff members to align writing development with overall academic goals.
• Monitor student progress and provide feedback to parents and staff.
• Maintain a positive and structured classroom environment.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field (preferred).
• Strong proficiency in English grammar and writing structure.
• Ability to effectively teach and assess the four types of writing:
• Narrative Writing: Helps students develop storytelling skills, focusing on characters, plot, and setting.
• Expository Writing: Teaches students how to inform and explain ideas clearly and logically.
• Persuasive Writing: Develops students' ability to present arguments and support opinions with evidence.
• Descriptive Writing: Encourages students to use vivid language and sensory details to enhance their writing.
• Experience teaching or working with young students (Pre-K–5th grade).
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Legible print handwriting and expertise in cursive writing instruction.
• Valid teaching or childcare license.
• Passion for education and student growth.

Work Schedule:

• Academic School Year: Monday – Friday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
• Summer Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
