Join the Electronic Fabrication and Test Systems Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State, where we're seeking an Electrical Engineering Support Specialist to contribute to diverse projects and tasks.


ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.


Your Role:

  • Collaborate on the layout, fabrication, assembly, documentation, and testing of standard and custom electronic equipment.
  • Assist in material and component selection, vendor interactions, and equipment installation, calibration, operation, and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair standard and custom equipment, identifying system faults.
  • Support senior staff in data compilation, archiving, and project support, both on-site and off-site.
  • Work effectively as part of a test project support team.


What We're Looking For:

  • A minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent education and experience. Higher levels require additional experience and/or education.
  • Light physical effort required for equipment assembly and operation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new computer programs.
  • Experience in electronics, electro-mechanics, and operating electronic test equipment.
  • Ability to assemble and test electronic circuitry.


Preferred areas (not necessary to be considered for the role) include:

  • Electrical Engineering Technology degree, technical trade college/vocational school graduation, or relevant military experience.
  • SMT soldering, cable assembly, schematic interpretation
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required


Higher-level positions require:

  • Independent project management with limited support.
  • Complex issue resolution and corrective action recommendation.
  • Component-level troubleshooting of electronics and cable interconnect systems.
  • Professional communication with internal and external stakeholders.


Your working location will be fully on-site located in State College, PA. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
