General Job Description:
The Advocate is responsible for coordinating and implementing services and supports provided by The Arc Arapahoe, Douglas & Elbert Counties (The Arc ADE) to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. This will include Child/Educational Advocacy, Advocacy for adults and Community Outreach.
Advocacy services can include any of the following: information about service systems, schools, IEP and 504 plans, housing, jobs, social security, guardianship, respite, friendships, and community connections.
Community Outreach can include any of the following: establishing/renewing relationships with community partners.
Qualifications:
- Excellent reading, writing, and speaking skills.
- Proficient operation of appropriate software and office equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of client, staff, and office information.
- Knowledge of services available through The Arc ADE
- Basic knowledge of resources available to children and adults with disabilities and their families in Colorado.
- Basic knowledge of Civil Rights laws, ADA, IDEA and Section 504
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills – negotiation, mediation and listening
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and be a self-starter with excellent time-management skills
- Ability to work effectively with people from various cultures in highly charged emotional situations
- Courteous and empathetic
- Experience working with/for people with disabilities
- You must have reliable transportation, if you drive, and provide a valid driver’s license and insurance.
- You must be willing to drive or obtain an alternate mode of transportation, throughout the metro area for meetings, workshops, trainings, etc.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual advocacy and support to adults and children with disabilities and their families in collaboration with other team members.
- Provide guidance and support for individuals with disabilities and their family members with the goal being empowerment and independence.
- Provide monitoring for compliance with federal and state regulations if requested by individuals with disabilities and/or their family members.
- Be knowledgeable on Civil Rights laws, ADA, IDEA and Section 504
- Be knowledgeable and stay current on laws, rules and regulations that provide protection, resources, services and supports to individuals with IDD and their families
- Attend and participate in IEP, Service Plans, and other meetings for individuals with IDD as requested
- Provide guidance and support for non-readers
- Represent The Arc ADE and its members on councils and committees.
- Plan, develop, contribute and/or present at community outreach workshops, in-services, and training on topics of general interest to people with disabilities and their families with the support from the Outreach team, as needed.
- Periodically contribute articles to various media created by The Arc ADE.
- Maintain expertise on applicable laws and effective support and interventions for individuals with disabilities through review of written materials and attendance at workshops and conferences.
- Maintain expertise in Medicaid, SSI/SSDI and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) and how one applies for these supports.
- Be familiar with special education personnel and administrators in the school districts served by The Arc ADE.
- Participate in task force and committees
- Collaborate with fellow team members and other chapters of The Arc.
- Network with and develop relationships with community partners.
- Be responsible for maintaining correspondence within this job description.
- Keep all pertinent information up to date in the database.
Office Administration:
- Answer phones, collect basic information, provide I & R as needed.
- Welcome visitors and assist as needed.
- Contribute to the general maintenance and administration of the office.
- Attend team meetings.
- Open honest communication with all team members.
- Attend social, educational and mandatory events sponsored by The Arc
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $27.00 - $31.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
