The Arc Jacksonville is looking for Independent Living Mentors for our Summer LIFE Experience Program. Independent Living Mentors (ILMs) guide participants in their experience while in the program. This is an 8-week position. The program has two, four-week sessions. Session 1 will be Sunday, June 2nd-Saturday, June 28th. Session 2 will be Sunday, July 6th-Saturday, August 2rd.
Life, Living Independently Finding Enrichment, is a summer program for individuals 18 years or older. The program is geared toward adults with intellectual and developmental differences (IDD) who would like to experience a sneak preview of living on their own. The Summer LIFE Experience is located in Frassati-Newman Hall, located approximately one mile from the University of North Florida campus. Participants enjoy the privacy and responsibility of their own bedroom in furnished 4 bed/2 bath apartments.
- The Summer LIFE Experience daytime ILM will be a part time position, working 30 hours a week. The shifts will be 8:00am-3:00pm, 4 weekdays and one weekend day per week. Daytime ILM’s will be paid $900 biweekly.
- The Summer LIFE Experience nighttime ILM will be required to live in one of the apartments at Frassati Newman Hall being used for the program with participants of the Summer LIFE program. Nighttime ILM’s will be provided with an apartment room plus a stipend of $450 biweekly.
- Anyone hired regardless of daytime or nighttime position will be required to attend trainings, Wednesday, May 28th, Thursday, May 29th, and Friday, May 30th, each day will be 9:00am-2:00pm. Employees will be paid the $15.00 hourly rate this week.
Reports to: Summer LIFE Experience Manager/Student Services Coordinator
Position Requirements:
- Possess a valid driver's license and transport students to events and activities.
- Summer LIFE ILM’s provide one-on-one guidance and leadership, and will be responsible for Summer LIFE Experience participants during designated work hours.
- ILM’s will assist in providing Summer LIFE Experience participants with independent living skills and time management training, some activities include: proper hygiene, completion of cleaning responsibilities, assisting students with budgeting’ and money-handling skills, reminding students to adhere to their day program schedules, work schedules, and recreational schedules etc.
- ILM’s will be asked to serve as social mentors, which would involve Summer LIFE Experience ILM’s accompanying students for evening meals and recreational/leisure activities.
- ILM’s will be expected to identify and implement opportunities for Summer LIFE Experience participants to increase their interaction with the campus and/or general community.
- ILM’s should have meaningful interactions with each Summer LIFE Experience participants.
- Attend and participate in all assigned Summer LIFE trainings.
- Escort and join Summer LIFE students in various activities, promoting their participation in the community.
- ILM’s will observe student behavior and group dynamics, promoting participation in social events.
- Actively listen and offer peer counseling, understanding students' attitudes, values, activities, and behavioral norms.
- Intervene in conflicts when appropriate, seeking guidance from the manager.
- Assist with public transportation training.
Agency Requirements:
- Demonstrate genuine respect and disability awareness, advocating for participant inclusion and integration.
- Complete required documentation on participant progress, areas of improvement, policy violations, and activities for the Summer Life Experience Manager.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude, serving as a role model for participants both on and off campus.
