The Arc is seeking a dedicated and customer-service oriented Benefits Specialist to join our Human Resources team under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director of Human Resources (AED-HR). This role is responsible for administering and managing employment benefits for all eligible employees, including health and life insurance, retirement plans, flexible spending accounts, COBRA, and other employee benefits. The Benefits Specialist will be expected to maintain our HRIS system, ensuring timely and accurate data entry, while also serving as a key resource to employees for benefit-related inquiries. Additionally, this role includes assisting with open enrollment processes, orientation for new employees regarding their benefits, and providing ongoing support to current employees with benefits-related concerns.
In addition to the core benefits responsibilities, the Benefits Specialist will manage employee leaves of absence and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, such as the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Paid Family Leave (PFL), Workers Compensation, and other legal or policy requirements. This includes coordinating the administration of FMLA and PFL, completing and processing related paperwork, and maintaining all necessary records. The Benefits Specialist will communicate regularly with employees on leave and supervisors about the status of leave, paid time off usage, and return-to-work plans.
The Benefits Specialist will also oversee all aspects of The Arc’s Workers Compensation program, including preparing and reporting claims, managing the Worker’s Compensation claim database, and serving as the main point of contact with the Workers Compensation carrier. The role will involve coordinating required forms and reports, attending hearings as necessary, and ensuring compliance with OSHA record-keeping and data collection. Additionally, the Benefits Specialist will collaborate with the HR team to assist with project management, including supporting open enrollment efforts and helping employees understand their benefit options.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with employee benefits programs and legal requirements related to leave management and Workers Compensation. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving are essential. The successful candidate will be able to maintain confidentiality, manage multiple tasks effectively, and provide excellent customer service to employees and external partners alike.
Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of human resource experience, specifically in the area of Benefits Administration. Position requires proficiency in MS Office computer applications and database management. Valid NYS driver license required. Must have a working knowledge of employment laws and regulations. Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required.
