Summary
We are seeking a qualified Director of Nursing and Health Services to be responsible for the management of the nursing services department and for the direction and supervision of all Registered Nurses and nursing services staff. Responsible for the quality of care for all individuals receiving services, including 24-hour care settings. Develops, directs the implementation, and ensures compliance of the standards of nursing care.
Responsibilities
- Plan and organize the operations of the nursing department to ensure individual needs and regulatory requirements are met.
- Review, develop and implement nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practices, and operational policies while maintaining compliance with healthcare laws and regulations set forth by OPWDD.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff.
- Collaborate with medical staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of quality nursing services for all individuals. This will include Physicians, Psychiatrists, and nursing professionals and peers from other agencies.
- Monitor and administer PPD placement and reads in accordance to OPWDD employment requirements.
- Act as a liaison between staff, family members/guardians, physicians and/or other medical service providers regarding the medical needs of the people served.
- Participate in organizational decision making and strategic planning, representing the nursing perspective.
- Attend team meetings as required.
- Maintain appropriate communication with supervisor, admin team, subordinates, and all site based agency programs regarding medical needs.
- Review, develop, and implement training and development programs for nursing staff and Direct Support staff who work certified settings. This includes the Medication Administration Program for all direct care employees.
- As appropriate, teach proper health care and personal hygiene practices to individuals served in our homes and programs.
- Administer medications according to doctor’s orders, and/or assure administration by certified staff or licensed nursing personnel as ordered.
- Maintain an appropriate system of medical records and make needed entries into individual’s records, utilizing Agency identified software.
- Monitor dietary orders/recommendations based on the nutritional needs to the people served, consult with nutritionists and physicians as needed.
- In partnership with agency Registered Nurses, monitor all medical and nutritional needs and concerns of those who live in our homes, communicating with other team members as appropriate.
- Participate in regular quality assessment and improvement activities, review the agencies Quality Improvement Program, and work with the Chief Compliance and Quality Officer on projects as assigned.
- Assure each person receiving services has a semi-annual/annual nursing assessment, self-med assessment, monthly health care report and six-month physical exam.
- Complete Infection Control Assessments at each residence at least once every six months.
- Complete a Medical Records Review Assessment at least once every six months.
- Complete semi-annual pharmacy reviews.
- Maintain a system of on-call nursing services; act as on-call nurse per schedule.
- Serve as a member of a committee as required or requested.
- Perform other duties in accordance with the framework and responsibilities as set forth by the New York State Health Department and OPWDD.
Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Must be a registered nurse and currently licensed by New York State Department of Education. In addition, at least five years’ experience working with people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and familiarity with OPWDD is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and general public.
MATHMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
Must be knowledgeable about Internet software including, but not limited to Microsoft Office 365 components. Becomes knowledgeable and trained in the use of agency specific software and OPWDD reporting systems for ongoing communication, tracking and reporting.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and active Registered Nurse license.
