Job Summary
The Engineering Manager reports to the General Manager and is responsible for providing technical expertise, customer support, and engineering leadership. This role oversees the engineering team, fosters innovation in system and product design, optimizes manufacturing processes, and drives continuous improvement. As a member of the senior leadership team at Great Bend Industries, the Engineering Manager is expected to align the company’s vision and strategy with daily operations while transforming the engineering department into a high-performance team.
Key Responsibilities
Manufacturing Parts Design
Lead the design and development of new and custom manufacturing parts design based on project specifications.
Establish design requirements and ensure adherence to engineering standards.
Manage engineering change notices to facilitate smooth transitions and process optimizations.
Provide technical guidance on manufacturing techniques, materials, and process improvements.
Estimating & Cost Analysis
Develop accurate project estimates, ensuring consistency in the bid-to-build process.
Incorporate comprehensive manufacturing cost assessments into all estimates.
Maintain accurate item master listings and bills of materials.
Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities in materials and manufacturing techniques.
Collaborate with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers to develop competitive and innovative solutions.
Provide technical and customer support for key accounts, ensuring prompt responses and strong client relationships.
Manufacturing & Engineering Support
Manage capital improvement projects for the manufacturing facility.
Analyze workflow, equipment placement, and space utilization to enhance manufacturing efficiency.
Develop and execute strategic plans to improve manufacturing costs and throughput.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize manufacturing processes and methods.
Team Leadership & Supervision
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and support personnel (up to five direct reports).
Assist in recruitment, training, and professional development of staff.
Conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and provide coaching to team members.
Facilitate regular team meetings to address project challenges and track progress.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best engineering practices.
Collaborate with department heads to align company objectives and drive collective success.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
3 years of progressive management experience.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proven leadership and people development abilities.
Track record of achieving performance objectives with minimal supervision.
Proficiency in SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, Mastercam, and Edgecam
Experience in developing and managing complex projects from concept to production.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
5 years of experience in a directly related role.
Professional Engineer (PE) License, ideal but not required.
Experience in the design and manufacturing of parts.
Background in metals manufacturing, machining, and welding
Familiarity with Made2Manage MRP systems
Experience managing capital expense improvement projects
