What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Visuals Editor position at The Atlantic?
The Atlantic is seeking an Associate Visuals Editor to join our newsroom team. This role will support the creation of visuals for The Atlantic’s print and digital platforms, including researching, licensing, and editing images; assisting in project management; and supporting art department workflows. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker with a passion for visual storytelling, a collaborative spirit, and strong organizational skills. The candidate should be a team player who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment across multiple teams in the newsroom. The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work. It could also involve a Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday schedule.

Responsibilities May Include
- Art Direction: Supporting Senior Art Directors to conceptualize and execute innovative visual ideas that enhance storytelling across the magazine and digital platforms.
- Research: Source and license contemporary and archival images; support the art department in identifying a diverse range of artists and photographers to contribute original work to The Atlantic.
- Story Coordination and Project Management: Coordinate assignments from ideation to completion, including communicating with story editors, the audience team, and other newsroom staff; supporting correspondence to freelancers, and ensuring all work adheres to design, production, and editorial standards.
- Administrative Support: Facilitate team workflows, such as tracking story requests, managing tools for team communication and planning, coordinating team meetings, and providing logistical support for special projects.
- Quality Control: Maintain high aesthetic and journalistic standards, ensuring that all visual content is compelling, relevant, and aligned with The Atlantic's brand identity.
- 1 years of experience working in design, illustration, digital media, or other relevant fields
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud
- Exceptional communication skills, with a clear and concise approach to collaboration in a fast-paced newsroom environment
- Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectivelyHighly creative and a driven problem-solver with superb aesthetic taste and the ability to think conceptually
- Enthusiasm for news and storytelling, with a keen interest in exploring innovative visual narratives
- Knowledge of current trends in visual storytelling, social media, and print and digital design
- Experience in journalism or a news-related environment preferred
