Qualifications
- Significant experience assigning and editing major feature stories, including narratives, profiles, and argued essays
- Editorial imagination and intellect; an eye for original ideas
- Large and varied network of writers, scholars, and other potential contributors
- A record of publishing writers of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to guide writers to do their best work
- A knack for display copy and other elements of magazine packaging and web publishing
- Assigning and editing feature stories for both the print magazine and the website
- Working closely with both staff writers and freelancers; expanding our network of contributors
- Helping to ensure that our coverage is compelling, thoughtful, original, and maximally ambitious
- Shepherding pieces through copyedit and fact-checking; working with teams across the newsroom to enhance the presentation and distribution of stories
- Guiding and mentoring more junior editors; offering suggestions and ideas to colleagues across the newsroom
