The Austen Riggs Center, a leader in Psychodynamic residential treatment for over 100 years, is seeking a Mental Health Specialist (MHS) to complement a multi-disciplinary team, whose collective goal is to help patients reclaim their lives. The MHS works within the nursing department which is staffed 24/7. The candidate would be an active participant in the therapeutic milieu and collaborate with the clinical staff while providing individualized support for adult patients with a wide range of complex psychiatric illnesses.
Austen Riggs is unique in that it functions within an open setting where relationships forged, replace restrictions and locks. The Mental Health Specialist builds those relationships based on respect of the patient’s agency, collaboration around goal development and the modeling of pro-social navigation of a therapeutic community.
In working closely with Nurses, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers Substance Use Counselors and the patient community, The Mental Health Specialist seeks to foster within patients, resilience, self-reflection, adaptive functioning, and an interpersonal approach to treatment.

- Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Experience in hospital or related mental health setting required.
- Training: CPR, non-violent assertiveness training, defibrillator.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
- Possess the ability to be aware of the various dimensions of diversity, including gender, race, identity, and ethnicity.
- Ability to concentrate despite interruptions.
- Ability to tolerate anxiety and remain reflective under stress.
- Flexibility to work evening, day and occasional night shift.
- Physical stamina is needed for evening, night extended shifts, and weekend work.
