The Banyan at Montclair has an immediate opening for a Director of Maintenance. The purpose of this position is to manage multiple functions of building operations and maintenance for a healthcare facility. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in healthcare building management and strong technical skills.
Summary / Objective
In keeping with our organization’s goal of improving the lives of the residents we serve. The Maintenance Director plays a critical role in maintaining all physical plant assets on the property. The Maintenance Director manages the day-to-day operations of the maintenance department.
Essential Functions

Responsible for all service and repair tasks as assigned.
Operates the maintenance department in a safe manner by ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and following established policies and procedures.
Ensures the physical building meets all safety and building codes.
Performs a variety of tasks on both the interior and exterior of building in accordance with mechanical, plumbing, EPA and electrical codes and guidelines.
Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
Schedules vendors and contractors for necessary building repairs and emergencies outside the scope of routine maintenance.
Assists in emergency situations related to the physical plant and acts as the facility’s safety officer. Coordinates facility fire and disaster drills.
Ensure that regular equipment and systems maintenance schedules are always monitored and followed.
Actively participates in State survey process by maintaining a presence at all times surveyors are on-site and provide information when requested by the survey team in a timely manner.
Works with department heads to ensure routine maintenance in resident care areas does not interfere with the care or safety of residents.
Responsible for operating the Maintenance Department within budgetary guidelines and limitations.
Responsible for training and providing guidance and education to staff regarding their performance.
Works with Administrator on providing counseling and disciplinary action to subordinate staff members as needed.
Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are always maintained. Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies.
Reports all hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, and supply issues to the supervisor.
Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment.
Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in resident care areas.
Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services as directed.
Supervisory Responsibility
May have supervisory responsibilities over Maintenance Assistants in the department.
Work Environment
This job operates in a health care setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the facility while pulling or pushing carts. This position works in resident care areas as well as outside weather conditions. This role may also come into contact with residents who may have contagious illnesses.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and / or move objects weighing over 50 pounds. Ability to remain calm under pressure.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This position is part of a health care facility that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
Travel
On occasions may need to travel to and from various locations in and around the surrounding community.
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent
- 3 years’ experience working in a building maintenance capacity
