What are the responsibilities and job description for the Resident Camp Counselor (seasonal) position at The Barton Center for Diabetes Education, Inc.?
PLEASE NOTE: This position requires living at camp for 8 weeks.
Pay is $250/week $50/wk if you have a lifeguarding certification. (Room/board/simple health care provided by OSMP; insulin provided for persons with t1d.)
Knowledge of t1d strongly preferred but not required.
Two locations: girls' camp in N. Oxford; boys' camp in Charlton.
Counselor
Seasonal, full-time
General Responsibilities:
1. Help campers live together and adjust to camp.
2. Be an integral part of the overall program at The Barton Center.
3. Use all skills, talents, experience and knowledge to positively influence the summer camp experience, in all areas of camp life.
4. Uphold The Barton Center code of conduct at all times.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Live in a cabin with a group of campers, ranging from six to fifteen total campers.
2. Lead campers in a variety of camp activities.
3. Set a good example for the campers.
4. Maintain good relations with the camper’s parents/family.
5. Increase each camper’s understanding of their diabetes.
6. Provide leadership in one or more program activities.
7. Participate in the planning and implementation of division and camp programs.
8. Participate in staff training and meetings.
9. Assist the CITs and Junior Counselors assigned to your cabin.
10. Participate in the camp’s evaluation.
11. Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy.
12. Follow safety and health regulations to insure the health and safety of all the campers.
13. Maintain good relations with other staff members.
14. Always remember that we are working toward a common goal- to improve the lives of children with insulin-dependent diabetes.
15. Perform additional tasks as assigned or requested.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum 18 years of age or have completed High School by the start of camp.
2. 4 weeks of Junior Counselor experience or 4 weeks of childcare/child supervisory experience.
3. Ability to teach and supervise a variety of camp activities.
4. Ability to maintain organization for multiple activities and events.
5. Current First Aid & CPR certifications.
6. Ability to be a positive role model for both staff and campers.
7. Ability to accept supervision and guidance and relate to one’s peer group.
8. Good character, integrity and ability to adapt to a camp setting.
