Job Title: Mechanic – Logging Rolling Stock
Duties and Responsibilities:
This job requires the mechanic to diagnose and repair mechanical issues, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic problems on all logging rolling stock. This includes skidders, feller bunchers, log loaders, and set-out trucks. Diagnosis and/or repairs may be required in the mechanic shop or at the logging site.
Primary Duties:
- Repair brakes on the rolling stock.
- Repair hydraulics on the rolling stock.
- Perform motor repairs on the rolling stock.
- Repair electrical problems on the rolling stock.
- Perform preventive maintenance on the rolling stock as instructed by the manufacturer.
- Perform oil changes as needed on the rolling stock.
- Perform transmission repairs when needed on the rolling stock.
- Perform motor repairs on the rolling stock when it is needed.
- When the rolling stock is in the shop for repairs or servicing operate and inspect the machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects or other repairs that needs to be performed.
- Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
- Overhaul and test machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Repair and replace damaged or worn parts.
- Read and understand operating manuals, troubleshooting guides and wiring schematics.
- Inspect parts for damaged or excessive wear
- Weld or solder broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
- Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace sub-assemblies, such as transmissions and engines.
- Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer’s specifications.
- Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
- Assemble gear systems and align frames and gears.
- Adjust and maintain machinery, using control and regulating devices.
- Must possess the ability to be focused on observing proper operating procedures and safety practices.
Secondary Duties:
- Must perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
- Must have the ability to operate material handling equipment.
- Must have the ability to operate all other rolling stock used in the sawmill.
- Must research, order, and maintain parts for services and repairs.
- Schedule maintenance for all rolling stock machines and equipment and keep equipment service records.
- Must be familiar with OSHA regulations regarding all of the rolling stock equipment.
- Must possess the ability to carry heavy objects, stoop, bend, climb, kneel or crawl to be able to move certain materials that cannot be moved with power equipment.
Skills Needed to Perform this Job:
- Minimum education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have completed a tech school mechanics program.
- Must have two to four years hands on mechanic experience.
- Must have their own set of tools.
- Must have excellent verbal communication skills.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must provide excellent written skills.
- Must be able to withstand extreme temperatures dependent on the weather.
- Must be able to work around fumes, odors, chemicals, and/or loud noises.
- Must wear PPE at all times.
