SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

BRC Trainmaster will develop, direct and support implementation of BRC safety programs, rules, policies, and procedures within the Transportation Department to ensure compliance and to eliminate injuries/accidents and reduce workplace risk.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor field utilization of safety, health, injury and accident/injury prevention programs, initiatives, and activities.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of railroad operations to assess the level of compliance with all BRC and FRA safety rules and regulations.
  • Collaborate and maintain positive interactions with others.
  • Meet or exceed monthly requirements of Operational Evaluations on all employees to verify compliance with BRC Safety Rules, Operating Rules, Departmental policies under the 49 CFR §217.9 BRC program.
  • Conduct proper investigation of all safety related incidents, including injuries, derailments, and all train accidents to determine the root-cause and/or corrective actions necessary for sustained improvements.
  • Collaborate with departmental staff in accident/injury and near miss investigations, risk reduction initiatives and hazard elimination analyses. Participates in the investigation of rail incidents.
  • Participate / Lead C3Rs programs initiatives and BRC Safety Committee initiatives.
  • Primarily supports all field safety initiatives and provides support as needed to Transportation, Engineering or Mechanical teams to identify and eliminate potential safety hazards and to adhere to safety policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Provide expertise/guidance in the development of specific functional safety programs.
  • Provide expertise/guidance in the development of less experience supervisors and employees.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience supervising employees in multi-shift 24/7operation preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer-based reporting and tracking programs preferred.
  • PC aptitude (Email, Word, Excel).
  • Initiative-taking and able to work independently.
  • Excellent presentation and oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to capture change improvement opportunities and incorporate into policies and safety programs.
  • Above average knowledge of all Safety and Operating Rules.
  • Practical knowledge of programs and regulations.
  • Strong multi-functional operations and safety background.
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and develop solutions.
  • As this position is considered safety critical, successful candidates are required to complete a pre-employment fitness for duty evaluation that includes a physical, vision (including accurate color vision), hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment.
  • Must be able to perform work that can be physically demanding such as walking on uneven ground, climbing up and down and lifting and pulling heavy objects.
  • Must follow all pertinent federal regulations relating to fitness for duty for railroad conductors and locomotive engineers.
  • Engine Service and/or RCO certificate(s) – Recommended.

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the best way for a management employee to learn the business at the BRC. You will be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor, RCO Operator or locomotive engineer.
