Science Department Head
The Bilgrav School West Palm Beach Position: First through eighth grade teacher
Reports to: School President
Work location: The Bilgrav School (www.bilgravschool.org)
Salary: $50,000 to $55,000 (depending on qualifications & experience)
Teacher hours: 7:30am to 4pm (full time) (school day is 8:00am to 3pm)
Ability to commute: The Bilgrav School, 307 Evernia Street, 2nd Floor, West Palm Beach, FL 33401
Responsibilities:
- Teach Science to grades 1-8 using multi-sensory methods while adapting its literacy requirements to individually match the needs of each bright, dyslexic student in the class
- Go beyond the base curriculum to add hands-on activities to each topic, especially ones that utilize our Science technology (light and colors sensors, force and motion sensors, etc.)
- Ability to learn software and use it in the classroom is required
- Create projects, assignments and assessments that will enable each student to learn the concepts and thoroughly express what they know
- Build a coherent science program across the grade levels
- Develop a training program for new science teachers
- Learn and lead Lego Robotics
- Build partnerships with organizations, such as the Loggerhead Marine Life Center and the Kennedy Space Center, etc.
- Run an annual Science Fair
- Attend training in the Orton-Gillingham approach for teaching dyslexic students
- Prepare the classroom for class activities
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
- Observe and evaluate student's performance and development
- Provide appropriate feedback on work
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
- Write quarterly reports on student performance and classroom activities
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules in accordance with the disciplinary policy of the school
Experience/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- 3 years Science teaching experience
- Experience with hands-on teaching and project-based learning
- Knowledge of dyslexia, preferable
- Willingness to become trained in Orton-Gillingham approach, learn more about the dyslexic learning style, and adapt curricula to that style
- Willingness to individualize assignments and assessments to match students’ high intellectual levels and lower literacy skill
- Willingness to be positive, encouraging, creative, and energetic
- Knowledge of educational technology: best practices in classroom teaching and in helping bright students with reading disabilities
- Writing skills: ability to communicate in writing about the science program, your teaching approach, and student progress
