What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Science Camp Instructor position at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature?
Bishop Summer Science Camp Instructor Responsibilities:
- Instruct and deliver a fun learning environment by implementing and delivering hands-on science experiences and activities.
- Always supervise campers, never leaving them unattended.
- Adapt lesson plans based on campers’ needs, background knowledge and interests.
- Ensure the safety of all campers.
- Help to maintain a neat, clean, and organized facility.
- 8-week summer commitment including a week prior to camp for training and wrap up days at the end of camp
- Camps are M-F, every week from June 9 – August 1, not including holidays.
- Mandatory training session June 4th - June7th
- Daily schedule is 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM or 8:00 AM to 4:00PM
- Foster interpersonal relationships through cooperation, helpfulness and friendliness toward staff, campers, parents and guests.
- Be a role model for campers, mentor Counselors-In-Training (C.I.T.S.)
- Communicate positively and effectively with all.
- Gather and organize curriculum materials for daily camp activities.
- Participate in daily set up and clean up routines
- Plan games and activities for in-between times using a menu of options. Develop new games and activities if possible.
- Deal with camper behavioral issues in a professional and positive way.
- Communicate daily with Camp Coordinator and the Director of Learning concerning camp concerns, or developments.
Qualifications:
- Enjoy working with children.
- Ability to multi-task, be flexible, dependable and responsible
- Passion for science and/or education, science/education background a plus.
- Degree or progress toward a degree in education or sciences and/or significant relevant work experience in camp/education.
- Experience facilitating groups of children in a non-traditional summer-camp setting (outside or in zoos/museums) is preferred but not required.
- Be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Actively participate in games, crafts and experiments to engage campers and build enthusiasm.
- Experience delivering and implementing hands-on and interactive curriculum (in sciences a plus)
- Ability to problem solve while being positive and patient.
- Have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to make quick decisions.
- Make sure all safety rules are followed
- Perform first aid to take care of injuries as needed.
- Keep accurate daily logs and incident reports.
