What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traveling Superintendent position at The BJC Group?
The BJC Group, Inc. is seeking an experienced construction traveling superintendent in the Middle Tennessee area. This is a full-time, salaried position.
Days and hours of operation are subject to project requirements and may be as early as 7am and as late as 7pm and may include weekend work. Work is both indoor and outdoor in all weather conditions. Will report to the Construction Project Manager. The traveling superintendent will be asked to sometimes oversee a project up to 3-4 hours drive from the home office. Weekly lodging will be paid by the company.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Look ahead 3 – 4 weeks to ensure materials and equipment are available.
- Direct field operations, including schedule/coordinate subs, direct BJC Group construction crews, coordinate deliveries.
- Set production goals (daily, weekly, monthly).
- Adhere to project schedule; set intermediate milestones and production goals to meet or exceed project schedule.
- Prepare short duration lookahead schedules weekly. Copy to the office for distribution to subs and suppliers.
- Maintain the field files. Update with new information. Post and update drawings.
- Schedule when subcontractors need to be on site and schedule the delivery of materials.
- Communicate with general superintendent manpower and equipment needs.
- Work Place Safety
- Perform weekly safety meetings.
- Walk the site on a daily basis to ensure safe work environment and practices. Note on Daily Reports.
- Communicate daily with Project Manager
- Schedule and budget status.
- Subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors on site.
- What work is being performed, deliveries of materials and equipment.
- Draft RFI’s for PM to send to owner of design team.
- Check status of approved RFI’s.
- Complete Daily Field Reports including the following:
- Subcontractors on site – crew size and hours worked.
- Equipment on site - type & number.
- Visitors to the site - name, company name, purpose of visit.
- Deliveries to the site.
- Work performed by BJC Group as well as subcontractors.
- Any problems encountered.
- Brief Subcontractors as they start the job; regularly communicate status of project and any changes.
- Monitor Subcontractors scope and performance. Upon completion, walk work area with subcontractor making sure work has been successfully completed (QC check).
- Quality control checks on regular basis
- Check subcontractors’ work prior to their completion of specific activities.
- Timecards
- Confirm that they are being filled out properly and on a daily basis.
- Project number.
- Project name.
- Proper cost codes are being used.
- Extra work items identified.
- Time is accurately recorded.
- Responsible for maintaining project budget and schedule (labor, materials, and equipment).
License/Certification
- CPR Certified mandatory
- OSHA 30 Certified preferred
