What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Cook, Women Center position at The Bowery Mission?
The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative communities with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish.
Serve as key contact for daily food service operations and special events for assigned location, West Harlem Campus at the Women Center. Models and maintains a positive environment and tone. Supervise activities to produce excellent meals for community and clients. Plan and direct food prep and storage in accordance with federal, state, and city food safety standards. Responsible for ingredients for weekly menus. Interact well with a variety of backgrounds, demonstrating the importance of each person and “loving people through food.” Requires both consistency and flexibility to deliver reliable services in the midst of factors that change daily. Sites require similar duties but vary in volume, population, schedule, etc.
Specific Responsibilities but are not limited to:
- Key contact for daily food service operations and special events at assigned location.
- Coordinate production of planned menus.
- Monitors cooks and others (volunteers, clients, etc.) to ensure production, procedures, and sanitation standards.
- Monitor and maintain workstations with required food and equipment to ensure compliance with safety, health, and other codes.
- Monitor food rotation, inventory, and storage processes to ensure quality and quantity needed for planned menus.
- Duties include reaching, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Schedule: Monday through Friday from 9am to 5:30pm or 10am to 6:30pm.
Requirements:
- Embrace's the organization’s Statement of Faith
- 2-3 years relevant experience in food service setting
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work and education.
- (NY or PA) Food Handler Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Demonstrated strong relational and organizing skills
Preferred:
- Knowledge in commercial cooking and lead cook responsibilities.
- Knowledge in food and workplace safety.
- Knowledge of population served.
- Proficiency with computers and smartphones.
Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $21 - $23 per hour
