The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative communities with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish.
The Volunteer Services team provides critical support across the organization with the help of over 12,000 volunteers each year. As we implement a new strategic plan for our Volunteer Services area, the Volunteer Coordinator will play an important role in expanding and increasing the effectiveness of this department. The Coordinator will be an important face of The Bowery Mission to volunteers and other stakeholders, able to welcome and lead groups with a high standard of hospitality and professionalism. He or she should be comfortable leading teams and speaking to groups of various sizes and backgrounds. The Coordinator will be responsible for collaborating daily with client-facing staff to assess needs, and leveraging volunteer services to fill those needs. The Coordinator will interact daily with volunteers and will actively collaborate with the Development and Program teams, helping to build partnerships and continually improve the volunteer experience.
Shifts & Holidays: The role includes responsibility for specific volunteer shifts and will require some work early mornings, late nights, and weekends. The Volunteer Coordinator must be available to work Thanksgiving Week and Thanksgiving Day. This role will be primarily based at the Tribeca Campus but support all other campuses – currently Bowery, West Harlem, South Bronx and will require travel to other program sites. This role is not suitable for remote work.
Specific Responsibilities but are not limited to:
- Work with Volunteer team to ensure a high-quality volunteer experience, focusing on greeting volunteers, hospitality, troubleshooting issues, and successful deployment across various tasks. Assist in the planning and implementation of Volunteer training and orientations.
- Greet and orient volunteers as needed and coordinate with Food Services, Community Life, and relevant teams to ensure the hand-off of volunteers is smooth. Debrief as needed.
- Provide administrative support for volunteer scheduling and communication. Answer emails and phone calls, follow up with groups who have volunteer reservations.
- Be proactive in recruiting and maintaining volunteer participation, actively monitoring various shifts in the calendar to make sure that our teams have enough support.
- Build relationships with volunteers both in-person and on the phone, and make notes on each volunteer group or individual expressing greater interest, keeping track of group preferences and strengths.
- Assess program needs and deploy volunteers effectively. Working collaboratively with Volunteer Supervisor, volunteer team, and program staff on site, regularly assess need areas for volunteers, and work with Volunteer Services team to recruit adequately for those needs.
- Maintain a clean, functional volunteer locker areas and folding aprons.
- Prepare reports for leadership and collate survey responses with a goal towards continual improvement of the volunteer experience.
- Exercise discretion in donor and personnel matters, paying attention to matters of confidentiality.
- Coordinate and team closely with other members of the Development team on projects of mutual benefit. Actively participate in team meetings and team initiatives. Be a servant leader and team player.
- Maintain an effective Christ-like presence as a spokesperson and ambassador for The Bowery Mission, representing all aspects of our ministry in a professional way to staff, visitors, volunteers, donors, and external groups.

Qualifications and Education:
- Embrace the organization’s Statement of Faith
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of two years professional experience, preferably in the non-profit sector
- Experience in managing volunteers within individual or group settings preferred
- Passion for the mission of The Bowery Mission and compassion for those experiencing homelessness and poverty in NYC
- High integrity that builds trust with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and a genuine desire to engage deeply with supporters from a diversity of backgrounds
Preferred:
- Ability to take direction, lead and motivate others, and creatively problem-solve
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment
- Strong written and verbal communication with good public speaking skills
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Google products
- Database experience a plus (Volunteer Hub, Salesforce)
Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $47,000 to $52,000 per year
