Title: Summer Camp Counselor
Reports to: Unit Director
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To enhance the campers’ experience at summer camp, while taking responsibility for their health and well-being. Responsible for the general care and supervision of campers; to take groups to activities and assist senior staff as needed. We are hiring positions for multiple locations throughout Monmouth County.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
- Responsible for promoting a positive healthy environment for campers and practicing personal leadership skills
- Participate directly in all daily camp activities, e.g., surf club, STEM, weekly and daily camp themes, high-yield learning activities, gym activities, free time activities, etc.
- Maintain daily group roster and daily attendance count for group, knowing location of all campers in group at any given time during the day; escort assigned group to and from all activities
- Respond appropriately to multiple unexpected situations and/or emergencies; communicate and resolve conflicts quickly and professionally, advising the camp director as need.
- Practice positive guidance and discipline procedures according to summer camp program discipline guidelines
- Serve as lookout (must watch campers in the pool, be an extra set of eyes on the water or on campers who are not swimming) and locker room attendant (assist campers in getting changed for swimming or using the bathroom, never leaving a camper alone)
- Supervision of all summer camp program participants, following health and safety rules while maintaining state of New Jersey ratios.
- Assist senior staff as needed during activities and free time.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Other duties as assigned
RELATIONSHIPS:
Develop a good working relationship with senior and administrative staff, as well as camp and program directors. Provide leadership and support to fellow counselors.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
- Experience working with children
- Participate in camp activities
- Able to communicate effectively with campers and staff
- Performing arts experience a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear.
- Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Must be able to participate in a high-energy environment
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour
