What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School Science Teacher position at The Bridge Way School?
Based in northeast Philadelphia, The Bridge Way School is PA's first and only recovery high school for youth in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.
With an intentionally small student population of approximately 25 youth, the Bridge Way School is looking for a science faculty member to lead students in developing as strong scientific citizens, innate explorers, informed and compassionate environmentalists, and analytical engineers. In addition to their science courses, they will support and co-manage off site multidisciplinary project-based learning opportunities with partnering organizations . The successful applicant will have a sincere dedication to serving Philadelphia-area youth in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. We are especially looking for a passionate, flexible, proactive, and relational educator who believes our youth have the capacity to grow, perform, achieve, and lead. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred
- Certified secondary science (2 or more subjects) with Pennsylvania Department of Education
- PA state and FBI clearances.
- 2 years of applicable teaching experience preferred, but not necessary
- Project management experience
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead science courses for grades 9-12 by developing strong curriculum, utilizing virtual courseware, writing intentional lesson plans, differentiating material, and assessing for progress toward mastery with deliberate feedback
- Connect and coordinate the intersection between garden learning, recovery arts, and internship programs including scheduling / communicating with partner organizations
- Make science fun, dynamic, and immediate to teens with a balance of joy and rigor
- Dismantle distrust, and create a culture of learning, joy, and safety in the classroom
- Coach and guide students in both classroom and 1:1 sessions to assess student strengths, needs and performance; identify potential areas of change and improvement.
- Nurture productive relationships with families, caregivers, and providers as an assigned faculty advisor
- Participate in bi-monthly team meetings with individual students to support our youth in setting critical SMART goals in recovery, academics, attendance, physical health, and mental health
- Complete regular progress reports and communicate academic standing to students and families
- Utilize and update Google Classroom, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and student information system to post student deliverables, offer feedback, and post grades
- Submit unit plans and other deliverables in a timely, complete manner
- Meet and collaborate with the instructional team to develop, deliver, and assess curriculum that can be scaffolded to ensure students have the best opportunities for success.
- Collaborate with STEM Interventionist and Special Education Coordinator to co-teach virtual learning lab credit recovery courses
- Co-plan with other instructional team members to ensure curriculum thematic topics stretch across classrooms
- Support Executive Director/Head of School with additional administrative concerns pertaining to instruction, programming, climate and culture, and safety as needs arise
- Ensure appropriate delivery of both special education instruction and related services as stipulated on IEPs/504 plans, including referrals for mental and behavioral health needs.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and recovery-focused language with students, staff, families, and partners
Position is full-time: $55,000-$65,000 commensurate with experience
