Overview
Pharmacy Technicians perform routine, manipulative and supportive tasks as allowed by New York State Law under the close supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
Responsibilities
- Package bulk medications into unit dose form using appropriate packaging equipment.
- Take inventory, request restock of medication and supplies.
- Reconcile medication orders against invoices, unpack stock, fill-in stock in storage areas and refill automated dispensing machines.
- Fill floor stock requisitions from various hospital locations and deliver supplies as needed including external hospital locations.
- Check dispensing areas for expiration of medications and remove from shelf and other dispensing areas.
- Assist Pharmacist in filling patient/customer prescriptions.
- Answer phone, handle request within authority and scope of job limits, prepare sterile products and follow protocol to compound drugs and dosage forms that are needed for patient care.
- Maintain work areas in a clean, neat and orderly and safe manner.
- Performs related assigned responsibilities as requested.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must have completed an acceptable Technician training program or have equivalent experience.
Experience:
- Experience in a hospital pharmacy is highly desired and experience in community pharmacy is helpful; however, neither is required.
Knowledge and Skills:
- After training, should demonstrate knowledge of competencies in sterile technique, unit dose distribution, packaging, unit inspections, brand and generic names, pharmacy calculations, and material management persons.
- Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Possession of a certificate indicating the successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program is preferred.
- The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is the preferred certifying agency.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
- Must be in good physical health to be able to stand for long periods, unpack boxes containing medications, restock shelves, transport medication carts with a force up to 25 pounds and lift and carry items up to 40 pounds.
